There are a lot of reasons he could have had "insurance issues" that have nothing to do with Mitch. Even if he had Medicare he could have run up medical bills.

Did Les' employers put into social security? Then he matches what they put in. If he then qualified for Medicare at 65 they'd take Medicare out of his social security. Then he'd have to buy supplemental for fill the gap Medicare doesn't cover. Or has his bum employers classified Les where he had to pay all social security alone which he couldn't do on his meager salary. Then, not qualify for social security and Medicare.

Sad to hear. He really seemed like a good guy. Well versed on Chicago Sports History too. From High Schools all the way up through the pros. Guys like that working in radio are tough to find.

I found Les one of those guys who really didnt care about the salary he made, but more that he was still working and had access to all the sports teams in the city.

A lot of comments in the Feder column...some stories...mostly people who just loved to listen to Les. Hopefully, he knew what he meant to folks.

Grote has a pretty sweet gig as the Bears' sideline reporter and Score update guy/fill-in host. I would guess that the overnight shift pays less than his current salary.

To me, Les was like a pair of warm, comfortable slippers. I don’t always work late, but when I did I would drive home listening to Les. He was not controversial, but comfortable.

And I will always remember “Les Grobstteeeen, WLS sports. And now, WLS radar weather…”

I assume the only way Mitch could justify local overnights to corporate was to pare down the costs below that of a national show. I didn't realize it was such a bad gig. Les really loved his work.

Nobody really knows what his insurance thing was or wasn't, but a basic wake and memorial service can easily be done for a couple grand. The fact that The Score hasn't volunteered to at least cover that is pathetic.
