Les posted here a few times over the years. He rolled with the punches as well as anyone.

It's a shame he didn't live to see the Packers lose next week. He would have enjoyed it.

I hear things like this all the time. The reality is that managers with a little savvy and a little pull can take care of issues like Les' pretty easily.

Les would have been better off working at McDonald's all these years.

I seem to recall North was instrumental in bringing him over to the station. I can't remember what the circumstances were of why he was available.

The truth is, it was probably working overnights that killed him. I don't think Les would have given it up even if he knew it would lead to his demise

With Larry Lujack? Our clock radio used to wake us up to that (mostly because of my older brothers).

Yep. Animal stories and Catherine Johns with the news. Unless I’m missing my timeframes.

Yep! As a kid--I was about nine or ten--I was often confused by it all, but it was overall pretty funny.

He was at the original MVP that bombed and went back to simulcasting the Loop, right? That probably would have been it for his first run. The last one I'm pretty sure was all Mitch.

The only way Les get's his funeral paid for is if Mitch pays for it out of his own pocket 100 percent. And that's not going to happen.

Corporate isn't going to do anything.

I think you are right about that. I was wrong about him at early WSCR not MVP. Incidentally MVP used to be WLS-AM right?

No, they were WLS-AM's hated rival, WCFL. Then they went on to simulcast the Loop, tried sports (an old documentary I posted here showed that they were going for a proto-Bernstein "smarter approach to sports"), failed miserably, went back to the Loop simulcast, and then started over again as ESPN.

They failed in large part because they tried to have Dahl host a morning sports talk show that he wasn't interested or qualified to do and then paired him with Bruce Wolf who was a constant irritant. IIRC, Les replaced Wolf...which further irritated Dahl

Another large part, if you'll pardon the expression, was the Fabulous Sports Babe.

Steve Cochran was in mornings or middays there at one point before he went to GN. That couldn't have helped, either. They also had Harry Teinowitz and Spike Manton, and Norm Van Lier with the proto-Bernstein guy from the documentary whose name I can't recall. Whatever they were doing, they were ill-equipped to go against the Monsters/HFC, I'm sure.

That's weird, Le's last post was a response to me saying he made 250k a year. I don't remember this at all.

Maybe because you had to have been drunk or stoned to think he made $205K

Still can't believe it. The only nice guy in Chicago sports radio. Been really though. I didnt even know the guy but been thinking about him all day long.

The Commodores Night Shift song has been in my head thinking about all those years remember Les.

I replaced some of the lyrics from the song in my head pertaining to Les and thought I'd post them here - my small tribute :

Grobber, Grobber, Grobber,
He was a friend of ours,
And he would be on everyday,
His heart in every line....
Grobber, Grobber, Grobber,
talked of the joy and pain
He opened up our minds
And I still can hear him say
Oh talk to me, so you can see, cubs, sox, or blackhawks..
Say you will, talking sports, for evermore, evermore
Gonna be some sweet sounds
Comin' down, on the nightshift
I bet you're talking proud
Oh, I bet you'll pull a crowd
Going to be a long night, without Les around
On the nightshift
You found better home
And know you're not alone, on the nightshift,

George Ofman with ZZ talking about Les having a tendency to take things (especially extra buffet food). Les because of this was called "the hand".

Most of the bits that Tanehill and the daytime shows did mocking Les are still up on SoundCloud.

Audacy app .. 670 Score... View guide... Then theres cards that move sideways of show replays. Doesn't appear to be a podcast. Also only way to hear Les' old time slot replay.

Thought I heard someone say he worked for AP, wonder if he was paid for each game story, it must not have been much, and the stringer work he did was likely not real lucrative either.

Would assume the sports director at WLS paid OK back in the day?

Sounds like WSCR paid him a minimal amount with no benefits, but was always surprised they kept the overnight spot local when is seems they are increasingly filling weekend spots with national stuff.

Really the last of the old school guys left.
