Now to $19.99/month for 4k subscription.
I think they've significantly raised prices each year for the last several years.
I don't think I'm watching $20 a month worth of Netflix.

Netflix is one of those companies that is super successful yet on the verge of extinction. Before they started producing their own content, what assets did they own? Nothing. They had a streaming player that was (and is) nothing special and cut deals with various studios to show their content. Anyone else could have jumped in to cut their own deals and those studios could decide to stop licensing to Netflix. And as we've seen, there are now several competing streaming platforms like Amazon, Disney, and HBO.

Clearly the only thing Netflix has that is worth anything is their owns shows, most of which are garbage. Their entire catalog is nothing compared to Disney or even HBO. But yet they persist (for now).

Probably not worth it. Maybe I will quite after finishing Shameless.

They're relying on people making their monthly payments out of habit. Quality of programming and selection of shows / movies to stream has gone done drastically. I will consider dropping once we finish Ozark.

That's nonsense. the entire catalog of good Netflix shows probably quadruples the number of good shows on Disney/HBO/Hulu/Prime combined.

I have pretty much every streaming service (because of kids) and I rarely watch any of them except Netflix. Netflix is definitely better than Amazon, HBO, Hulu, Starz, Disney and every other streaming platform. Once you watch a few shows or movies on those other platforms, they're virtually useless. There isn't any fresh content that justifies a monthly investment.

I find there to be tons of good content on Netflix, I watch it all the time. I'm not thrilled about the price going up, but it is pretty much my go-to when I am looking for something interesting to watch.

this guy gets it.

I can always find things on Netflix to watch. I can go months without looking at some of the other ones unless there is a specific show/movie that just dropped. Can't remember the last time I watched something on Prime. Probably the Boys and that was over a year ago I think.

Agreed. I wish they had more 4k stuff, but I'll live.

Wouldn't it be great if someone bundled all these streaming services together for one price? They could call it cable.

My wife is always asking why we have these streaming services. I keep saying okay, I'll cancel Netflix and then the entire family throws a conniption fit about some show they are watching. I don't watch much of them anymore, its all the kids and her so I really don't care if we drop it. Same with Disney+. They are very good at spacing out shows because there always seems to be one more show they are trying to finish,

yep, that's the Disney+ way. Give you one good show at a time and then a brief wait till the next one. It probably would be smart to cancel for a year and then re-up for a month and watch everything you missed in the past year, cancel again and do it again the next year. I don't have that level of patience, but Im sure some do.

Invincible is on Prime and pretty great. Basically an animated version of Boys. I still have to watch Wheel of Time, but that's on the list. We are mostly on Peacock or Netflix watching old shows. The rest of the services are good for Christmas movies. Disney+ is decent about releasing plenty of content, often overlapping shows and new movies.

Netflix pretty much sucks. They have one show I think is worthy which is Ozarks. But the rest is junk.

Most of the stuff on there is something to watch when you want an excuse to watch something or are bored.

It's like B Hollywood streaming service.

Disney Plus has been ok.

HBO Max is the best but it's not consistent. But that's the good thing - you can cancel any time and then resub when you see a show you like.

Disney and HBO are great when you're looking for a specific big budget thing to stream. Netflix is great when you have no idea what you want to watch.

It's true that bundling was the smartest thing cable TV ever did. But cable has commercials on regular live channels and you need the DVR to record programming because cable's on demand content shows commercials.

A lot of what makes cable expensive is the sports channels. But on YouTube in less than 15 minutes you can watch all the football or basketball highlights with less than two minutes of commercials. I have not watched similar highlights for baseball or hockey, but the highlights I do watch are more entertaining than the live games.

I liked Playstation Vue before it got canceled. I had YouTube TV for awhile, but they added Viacom channels and went from $49.99 to $65. That's too much of a jump to keep subscribing.

I think the regular YouTube has better content. Maybe not the same stuff as premium services, but I find CBS 2 puts up their weather forecasts so I don't need to watch them on regular TV.

I've heard that advertisers are clamoring to follow the eyeballs from network TV to the streaming services. At some point, these streaming services are going to capture every person that's even remotely interested in signing up. Once they do, the only way for them to increase their revenue substantially will be to sell advertising.

They'll make some ultra expensive tier that's commercial free, but everything else will have ads. At the point, the cable system will be reborn, but just be fractured into smaller more a la carte chunks.

The trick to Netflix and similar services is to get together with your family and divvy up who pays for what. That's how we do it.

Mom pays for Netflix
Brother pays for Disney+ bundle (Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+)
I get HBO Max for free through my Internet provider and pay for Amazon Prime.
