Seems the younger folks recognize that most modern music is a completely fake creation, apparently the autotuned and sampled crap that is trotted out there is not resonating and why would it, why not just find out who did the sample and listen to the original artists?

I don't spend much time with younger people but I have noticed the kids I do see wearing older band t-shirts like Nirvana or The Beatles. I know I went through a phase between 16 and maybe 22 when I was able to go back and find Dylan, Beatles and classic rock which helped inform and mold my musical tastes. I feel bad for the kids that aren't digging backwards.

Maybe recent movies have a part in this? The students who went to see "Bohemian Rhapsody" had no idea how many tunes they like and are familiar with are Queen songs.

Video games like Guitar Hero and GTA embedded 70's and 80's arena rock in a generation's developing brains.

Reading through the article, (i) he's referring to approved commercial outlets for consuming music. I don't think he even counts SoundCloud or BandCamp etc in his metrics--the most popular, likely places to encounter new, new music are not the places he's measuring. (ii) it makes 100% sense for the capital behind the music industry to shift to reselling back catalogs vs the difficult, tricky, risky proposition of trying to develop the next big thing. You have to have 20 potential next big things in the pipeline and if you're lucky one or two will hit--if you're really lucky nobody in your next big thing will OD or get arrested with an underage fan before you're able to recoup. And due to the balkanization of outlets and audiences, even when an artist "hits" today it's nowhere near the payoff it used to be.

while the "market" for new music as measured by spotify streams or record sales or radio play might be down, the amount of new, new rock and new, new rap and new, new americana and new, new ambient/electronica et al released via these non-commercial or quasi-non-commercial outlets is far greater per week than any point in history.

Rick Beato had a recent video about it and I think he said according to Spotify, only 5% of the plays/streams are of songs released within the last 18 months (maybe he was referencing the same article above...I didn't read it).

My 17 year old daughter likes both classic rock and modern music - although I would note that most of the modern stuff she likes are "real" bands and not the individual singers that dominate so much of the current music scene.
