Has anyone noticed the amount of items out of stock and empty shelves has been really bad the past 3-4 weeks? I don't think it was even this bad when COVID started two years ago and everyone was hoarding. There are items at my local Jewels that haven't appeared in weeks. I think we got Jimmy Carter Part 2 going on here, buckle up folks...

It has nothing to do with COVID policy. It happens every winter.

Who has said this with regard to items being short on stock or out of stock?

Supply chain issues are definitely a COVID problem.

They are also overblown such as the great Christmas gift scare that caused everyone to buy gifts in September. The great cream cheese shortage was real though.

The Great Turkey Shortage didn't seem to be a problem either.

Supply chain issues are aggravated by a lack of truck parking near urban areas and by the transition to electronic devices for tracking driver duty time limits. Many drivers are reporting 10% less driving time on many days. Bad weather exasperates both of the above points.

True. Both places I work have been hit or miss every week with what we get delivered or not. Office supplies, ingredients, etc but it's like something is always missing.

I don't like seeing the gaps in grocery stores. It makes me nervous.

People don't write the orders anymore. Ordering is computerizd. The shelf and overstock have be to properly counted in the system. There could be 10 cases of a particular canned soup in the system that don't exist. Or a pull sheet from an order says to pull a needed case out of the overstock for the shelf. It doesn't happen. But, the computer says now the shelf is full when it's really empty. That's why when you go online to check something is in stock. You get there and the shelf is empty. System works fine with a good staff. Disaster with a lazy staff. Also loads are always late during the holidays and big snows.

Also managers could be cutting payroll with skeleton crews.to pad their bonuses. Loads could be sitting in the backroom with nobody to work it.

The shelves in many grocery stores across New England are so barren you'd think the supermarkets have been decimated by looters. This part of the country has been drifting to the point at which food riots seem like a realistic possibility since September or October.

I am pretty sure the cream cheese I purchased had been returned to the store by someone or it was found by an employee in the liquor aisle given there was room for about 150 of them and there was one left. It was at that time that I realized that our response to COVID may have been misguided.

To nobody's surprise, the last two times I have been to Aldi they have been incredibly well stocked on pumpkin spice cream cheese.

I would think that for at least bigger grocery chains that's connected to check out? How does the Amazon just walk out with your cart work?

Supply chains are fucked and I honestly don't think most people realize how bad it really is out there. this extends well beyond just groceries.

I do have a good cream cheese based dip that can be served with or without a crock pot.

Meh. Seems kinda natural to me. I was always weirded out how all shelves used to be stocked full all the time. Like, how much excess are we making just to have fresh product ready for purchase? Half of it gets chucked if it doesnt sell.
