pizza_Place: What??
Interesting. I thought I was having Mandela moments as an adult because I distinctly remember orange yolks when I was a kid while also eating fruit loops

miss brown's mushrooms.

noticed that the chicken legs/thighs/breasts you get from KFC are getting smaller and smaller and smaller. glad to see that KFC has allowed for more air in their buckets. the 8 piece bucket...it's really 6 off the bat, the 2 'wings' aren't enough to feed a bird. the remaining 6 pieces..well. not sure if colonel sanders would approve.

Eggs will be markedly different in summer.

How so?

Free range chickens will be eating differently in the summer. They won't have just the grains that farms feed them, they eat insects, and worms, and little frogs and all kinds of shit and they get much kore complete nutrition. The yolks aren't yellow like you see from store bought eggs. They're ike orange almost. Taste differently.

Other difference is the yolks won’t run as much and stand up more. Whites are thicker too. Some of that is just the freshness but it’s environmental and probably some other factors as well.

Anybody raise chickens? We have a friend who has a couple of them, but I've never really talked to them about it. What do you do with them when the weather is like this?

We have about 20 hens and 2 roosters (at the moment) we have a 6x8 coop and everything is pretty automated. Our chickens free range and their door is set on a timer. Their waterer in warm months stays full for a month at a time. in the winter about once a week. feed I fill about once a week. in the spring summer and fall they eat way less feed than in the winter. They are mostly eating everything else around.

we have no meat birds, only layers. Our roosters are game birds and we have a number of game hens and game crosses in the flock. The game makes them very hearty animals capable of surviving minor attacks. we have other birds where if a raccoon looks at them funny they are dead.
