Cousins is pretty average in situations where he needs to be great. He's risk averse and that's why his TD to INT ratio is so good. That said, I have to believe that a Mike Tomlin for example, could find a way to win a lot of games with a QB throwing for 4,000 yards, 33 TDs and only 7 picks.

I'm reading that Mike Pettine might be Vikes new DC. Seems that position is pretty fluid. Vikings are going to be behind almost everyone as they fill out a staff. That is even if O'Connell signs a contract. It's the Vikings, so anything can happen.

Cousins is not the worst QB in the league. Yes...a team would sign him. He's under contract with a very heavy cap hit. That's an entirely different story. None of these teams are gonna pay the price to take him off the Vikings hands this year.

How would ya rank these guys..

Wentz
Jimmy G
Winston
Cousins

Cousins
Jimmy G
Winston
Wentz

The talent gap between Cousins, Wentz, and Jimmy G is negligible, but if I had to choose I'd rank Cousins 1, Wentz 2, Garoppolo 3, Winston 4. None of them excite me. Given the cap consequences, I'd take any of the below over Cousins. No team is going to take on that Cousins contract, yet alone give up draft picks to get him. Minnesota is stuck with Cousins for 1 more year.
Cousins - 1 more year under contract. Dead Cap hit $45 Million
Wentz - 1 more year under contract. Dead Cap hit $15 Million
Jimmy G - 1 more year under contract. Dead Cap hit $1.4 Million
Winston - UFA
Andy Dalton - UFA
Mitch (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky - UFA

List of possible Vikings DC. I'm fine with whoever they end up with.

Will Ragatz
@WillRagatz
The first names connected to the Vikings’ DC vacancy are emerging:

- Lions DBs coach/PGC Aubrey Pleasant (via
@TomPelissero
)
- Ravens DL coach/RGC Anthony Weaver (
@MikeGarafolo
)
- Former Ravens DC Wink Martindale (
@jeffzrebiec
)

Pleasant and Weaver worked with KOC in LA.

Mike Klis
@mikeklis
Per source: Broncos RB coach Curtis Modkins leaning toward joining the Vikings as their RB coach/run-game coordinator. Modkins did great work with Phillip Lindsay and Melvin Gordon/JaVonte Williams the past four years in Denver.

Looking like Martindale goes to Giants. That leaves Weaver or Pleasant unless they decide to bring a Mike Pettine or Wade Phillips in for interviews.

That would be a potentially great hire. I hope he doesn't get that job. He was better in 1 year as a play caller than Nagy was for his last 3.5 years.

Won't matter. The Vikings will still be mediocre.

That still puts them in 2nd in the NFC North and the favorites if Rodgers leaves the Pack.

Maybe but I've heard this with regard to the Bears as well. I'm not sure why winning what would be the worst division in football is considered a something to get excited about. Losing in the 1st round of the playoffs is no fun. Believe me, I know.

The #Vikings will be adding former #Colts GM Ryan Grigson to the front office in a senior personnel position, a source said.

trent richardson going to get another chance

Quote:
Richardson was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft and was often ineffective in his brief stint with the Cleveland Browns. The Colts traded a first-round draft choice for Richardson near the beginning of the 2013 campaign, which hasn't panned out at all.

Colts general manager Ryan Grigson recently stuck by his decision to deal for Richardson.

"When we made that trade it was a great shot in the arm," said Grigson, via NFL.com's Conor Orr. "We lost our starter. I felt like it was the right football move at that time. I'll never back off that thought. I thought it was a no-brainer."

Thankfully, he's not making any final decisions and the Vikings don't have a need at RB. That said, Cleveland has studs on both sides of the ball. If he and Kwesi can replicate that here, I'll be extremely happy.

Latest news has Ed Donatell getting the Vikes DC job. Underwhelming hire if so.

Good article on Grigson when he was with the Browns. Hopefully, he's a good fit for Kwesi.

Why do you consider Donatell underwhelming?

He is a key Fangio lieutenant.

This is potentially a great hire.

He's 65 for one thing. He wasn't on their radar at all until this week. So it makes me think the other candidates that they were high on weren't interested or they're not doing a great job of identifying finalists. I think Donatell will be there one year and they'll find an up and coming guy.

All sounds like a good thing.
The Bears should have hired at least one highly experienced coordinator or assistant coach. I'm fine with giving guys their first shot, but balance....you have to have SOMEONE with experience.

Vikes move on from long time DLine and assistant Head coach Andre Patterson. They've really cleaned house. Not sure anyone is left on coaching staff or front office from previous regime. I like it. Patterson going to NY Giants to be their DLine coach.

Ian Rapoport@RapSheetFrom NFL Now: The #Vikings and coach Kevin O'Connell continue to work out a deal, as the delay (if it's even a delay) has nothing to do with the #Rams. The plan is for a press conference Thursday, so he doesn't have to fly back and forth with the parade in between

Let’s face it, it has become difficult for Minnesota sports hires to lose the press conference. Brad Childress managed to do it at his introductory presser in 2006 and we never got over it. Since then, it’s been victories for everyone from Mike Zimmer to Rocco Baldelli to P.J. Fleck.

Hey, you got Mike Pettine as a defensive consultant, too, so start planning the championship parade route now.

Ha! True. It's a nice gig for failed DC's. We're switching to a 3-4 defense which the Vikings haven't used since 1985. Should be interesting.
