Her parents were on one of the morning shows, stating she was facing disciplinary action for “defending a teammate.” Curious what her crime actually was.

Her parents think that although she was 18, parents should still be in the loop on such matters. Universities seem to want to cut the parents out of anything disciplinary or medical, but they’re fine keeping them in loop on the financial side of things.

There is an irony as far as child age and college.

It’s a very odd arrangement. If my kid is in disciplinary trouble, academic trouble, gets abused (short of a police report, and even the campus police are owned by the school), is in counseling for depression, etc. I have no right to know any of that.

But when it comes to paying for medical, where’s Dad’s blue cross card?

And the financial piece? The FAFSA basically sucks every portion of your financial picture from the IRS, and you fill in the rest of the picture.

In my view, if I’m paying, it’s still my kid and I want to know if something troubling is going on.

The recommendation, I think, is to have the kid sign a power of attorney before he leaves for school freshman year which gives you the right to demand the info and the school the obligation to provide.

The whole system is confusing when it comes to whether your college kid is an adult or not. My son (20) made a chunk of change trading stocks last year in addition to his income from part-time jobs, and I'm not sure whether he can file taxes on his own or if the tax on the gains would fall to me (in which case I'm in a higher bracket). And he's now got enough cash and income to live on his own, so can't he fill out FAFSA himself and exclude my finances? Or is he always considered my dependent while he's a full-time student and I'm paying his tuition?

If he is on your return the year previous he is you FAFSA dependent. He can be a dependent and still file a return but states that I think?

As for GD’s point that is a standard form any college office has to get you your kid’s info. If the kid refused that’s a different problem.
