You forgot cursive writing and how to use encyclopedias, the latter turns out to be quite important when trying to access info on the internet, can't count the number of times my younger staff is amazed by how quickly I can find information while they struggle to think what search terms they should use to find the info.

I also don't get adult coloring books, back in the day you would get a grade for coloring within the lines, and my coloring always sucked so would get NI which meant needs improvement, so coloring would just piss me off because it reminds me of failures from my grade school days.

this is the easiest one. first off, you make sure like you're dressed up like the third member of the KLF. then you start yelling about how there's an alien invasion inside and you're the top qualified expert to help them out of their jam. tho you cant be responsible for what happens to the place at the end of the ordeal.

Explaining the idea of a collect call to my cousins' kids and grandkids is always good for a laugh. Especially once they have their own smartphones.

They'll figure it out once they have to make a call from Rikers or CCJ.

Is that where NFL referees buy their shirts? Or is it a zebra accessories store.. Whatever it is, I don't think we had it in Detroit.

venture was basically the same thing as k-mart but it lost out to k-mart and i think it was gone from the chicagoland area by like 1990-93 or something. i remember shopping there when i was a kid but by the time i was driving in 96 it was long gone, so it had to be out of there before i hit my teens. other than having way more style so you could instantly know there was a venture store when you driving by, idk if they had any other advantages.

here's some youtuber who did a 10min video on venture stores

my thought was that venture and zayre were a few notches below the class of a k-mart. k-mart had the blue light specials and even had a cafeteria.

i remember buying knock-off adidas top 10 high-tops at k-mart for apprx. $25. probably around 1981.

Venture had a Cafe kinda thing. You could get basic carnival food and icee drinks.

Venture's predecessor was Turn-Style, which was owned by Jewel. It was their failed attempt to become the all in one stop, in part because they tried to manage separate brands.

The Jewel/Turn-Style in Skokie had the Jewel open later than stand alone Jewels, so I remember us stopping there and waiting in the car on Saturday nights on the way home from dinner while my mom went inside and picked up five or six things which she needed for Sunday.

The Arlington Heights Venture closed around the end of 1998-early 1999...actually became a K-Mart before completely closing in early 2001 or so.

yeah the only venture i really remember was the one on elmhurst by dempster.... you know, next to the hobby lobby. i'm pretty sure that one was gone by the tine i was driving in 96, but by the time i was doing that i was on my own little anti-establishtarian kick so i could have given a fuck about dying/closing retailers. nowadays i'd want to stop by to see it and catch some deals.
