Came to our grade school because his coach was from our town and the coach was speaking.

I spent an evening during freshman orientation talking with Dan Kreft. He was a 7 footer. Evan Eschmeyer (sp) as in that realm but I on,y met him in passing. Dan was a super nice guy, not much of a basketball player.

Got Bill Cartwright’s autograph at the golf course. As a kid I always wanted to be 6’7 but it’s gotta be a huge hassle. I play golf with a guy who has size 16feet and he has a hell of a time finding decent shoes.

I dated a woman taller than me once. It was weird. She was 6’2”. I don’t think I could live my whole life with a woman that tall. Probably why it ended.

The majority of my girlfriends have been taller than I am. My wife is 5'4" and occasionally she asks me what I'm doing with her since I like- in her words- "big blonde cows."

My suggestion for Bagels is that it will probably be very easy to find a 6'5" woman these days as long as he isn't transphobic.

A friend of mine who I haven't seen in a long time is a little wee fellow, maybe about 5'4". His girlfriend was no giant but obviously taller than he is, maybe 5'7" or so. At their wedding his father-in-law was sneering about the marriage and I heard him say, "How the fuck is this marriage gonna work? She's gonna dominate him." That was about 35 years ago and I think I heard they are still married.

A friend of mine's kid is 6'8"-6'9" and wears some crazy shoe size like that. My friend works at a boarding school and the kid attended high school there. This is a place where rich people from all over the world send their kids.

Every Spring when school ends, some of the kids are going back overseas and their families are so rich that it's simply impractical to take all their shit with them. The school puts out special dumpsters for this stuff and people go through them and find stuff like almost new super high end electronics and other Veblen goods that the kids just don't want to carry or ship home.

One year my friend's kid found three pairs of almost new shoes in his ridiculous size. He couldn't believe it. When your foot is that large, your fashion choices are limited unless you're going the custom route. The kid tried to think of who else on campus wore a shoe as big as he did.

I got a Will Perdue autograph once, but he wasn't standing up. Supposedly he is 7'0". I did once see a 7 foot teenager playing basketball in a gym, but he wasn't very good for his height. He had slow release on his shot and got blocked by a guy who was 6 foot and more aggressive. It's estimated that there are 2,800 7 foot people in the world.

Being tall certainly has its advantages. But really you don't want to be taller than 6'5" or 6'6". Taller people tend not to live as long and sometimes have posture issues. The guy who was the tallest only lived to be 22. A lot of the people who are tall like that have thyroid conditions. It's best to get that checked out before the kid keeps growing out of control.

Most CEOs are over 6 foot tall. It certainly has its advantages in selection of women and playing pro sports. But the disadvantages are finding shoes, which isn't too bad because of the Internet. Also there's not much legroom on an airplane seat for taller people and you can hit your head on stuff made for shorter people. If you're trying not to be noticed as a celebrity being 7 feet tall is something you can't disguise.

Also people in basketball think that the tallest guy should post up and absolutely abuse the opponent. But not all tall guys have a temperament like Shaquille O'Neal that they're just going to attack the post. A shorter guy may be do better if he is more aggressive. There are guys who are 5'11" or 6'0" who play pickup or league basketball that are just beasts in the paint and outplay their size in terms of rebounding and post play. The NBA has gone away from the post game and so there are a lot of guys 6'10" and up that are shooting three pointers. So a lot of how well people play in basketball has to do with how aggressive and how hard they play. But ultimately defensively there is no substitute for length.
