Mac and Slappy will be in mourning as the great Paul Newman has passed. Great actor and great salad dressing ..

You know the potential of this board. Why are you aiming so low?

This will likely increase the talk of Slapshot on MJH this season.

Take 5 (personal faves, not most successful or highly regarded)
1. Cool Hand Luke
2. Slapshot
3. The Verdict
4. The Sting
5. Cat On A Hot Tin Roof

The man might the most successful both-genders actor in history. Women wanted him... men admired him. I forever will have fond memories of watching "Luke" with my dad and brother and a six-pack of friends. Slapshot will get a spin every year near NHL lid-lifters for the rest of my life. The Verdict should have earned him an Oscar for best actor. Can't recall who won it that year, but PM was masterful as the drunken, ambulance chasing, failed attorney who made good.

Sad day indeed.

My personal top 5

1.Cool Hand Luke ('nuff said)
2.Butch Cassiday (Newman, Redford, and a smokin' Katherine Ross. What more do you want?)
3.Slapshot (classic)
4.The Verdict (great pick Mac)
5.The Sting (great flick, and what a swerve at the end)

The sad thing about getting old is seeing your idols pass on. Tough year for Sevenfold, losing Carlin and now Newman.

Mac, Im a little younger so I would throw the color of money up there on the list.

Having hung out at the two italian restaurants next to it/across from it while at DePaul (Via Carducci, Stefani's), St. Pauls Billards on Fullerton to this day remains closed. I had hoped to make enough money one day to buy it and rehab it; of course, then I got married ;)

Agreed Mac! Ben Kingsley won for Ghandi that year. I was a mere 12 year old yute, but clearly remember my dad saying, "Newman got fucked!" when the winner was announced.

He did get his "body of work" Oscar a few years later for The Color Of Money, ala Pacino for Scent Of A Woman.

I can't believe I left The Hustler off my top 5. I might have to take The Sting off my list. Damn, pickin' 5 Newman favs is like picking your favorite kid! He was also great as the aging mob boss in Road To Perdition.

He is/was my favorite actor. He kept his good looks up til about 75. His movies are to me, what porn is to most of you guys. He was sexy.

Spaulding, I think you and I - and maybe the Grid Iron Assasine are the only people who have seen Nobody's Fool. A nice little human condition movie, taking place in upstate NY - with an understated role by Bruce Willis.

This seems like Grid's type of movie but I didn't expect you to be a fan too.

It's by far my favorite. It's a heartwarming story and wonderfully acted. It made me laugh and almost cry. The whole cast is great, especially Newman. There is not much action but it was never boring. He would have had a shot at an Oscar in any other year. I'm not much of a movie person and I love this movie.

There are some great lines in this movie too. I quote them often and nobody gets them.

Reggie Dunlop 1977: Slapshot- Your son looks like a f-ag to me , you better get remarried soon or he'll have a cock in his mouth before you can say Jackie Robinson.

A great actor and a funny story as my Aunt thinking this was a "G" rated hockey movie back in 1977 took me and my 2 cousins to see "Slapshot" when we were all of 10 years old and as soon as Newman starting screaming 'Suzanne sucks pussy' she was hauling us out of the Plitt theater yelling that Paul Newmen is a filthy man. I did not get to see the rest of slapshot untill 1980. By far my favorite actor.

top 5 Newman for me .

1. Slapshot
2. The Hustler
3. The Sting
4. Color of Money
5. Absence of Malice

Nope. I've seen it as well, and always thought it was underrated.
