only game I got kicked out of as a coach was when my peewee boys were playing a girls team. The girls are all a year or two older and at that age much bigger than the boys on my team. The ref must've been JDC's husband because he let the girls rough my team up pretty good in a no check game (all games vs girls team are non check even though the league was checking). Ref was also too scared to stand within 5 feet of the centers when dropping the puck. Total beta. I finally lost my shit on him and got run from the game.

I did not cheer for the girls team. Honestly, they were one of the teams I wanted them to beat both on the scoreboard and physically. As shakes said a lot of it is really unfair. You put some full grown girls at 14 some 5'6" or bigger against 11 & 12 year old boys who are barely 5' if that. The girls tend to play chippy or as if they are world beaters while most of the boys aren't really sure what they should do or how they should play in this situation. They know the girls are bigger and are not always comfortable being rough with them because they are girls. The refs tend to favor the girls and the game sometimes gets out of hand. The boys get frustrated, almost inevitably somebody lites one up, and then everybody is all omg those poor delicate girls. Sometimes the girls start flopping. You just get bad feelings watching the game. I don't think it helps how some of those girls then view boys either. Problem is if you are going to lace up and act like a bully then at some point you will get knocked on your ass regardless of sex. It's not a good position for young women or young men to be put in.

I don't know if there are enough girl teams to make a sustainable league and girls should have the opportunity to play if they want and have it be somewhat competitive. Maybe stopping it at Squirt would be better. That way the girls are 12 and under and boys are 10 and under. I really wish there was some sort of rat league for U18 even coed where people just played without fear of serious injury or really even competitively.

There were girls that would be good enough to play with us as a kid, but the notion of playing an all girls team seems ridiculous. Especially if it's kids playing teens.

I really don't get the point. Practice maybe, but not a game.

Sounds like an entertaining afternoon. Especially, "The boys get frustrated, almost inevitably somebody lites one up". Yeah, the one with the older sister, I'll bet.

They deserve an opportunity to play competitively and statistically girls are more likely to quit if they are on a boys team. It's hard for them to fit in, the experience is difficult etc.

I personally feel the parents (mostly the girls') need to be honest with their kids about the situation. You can compete but you cannot be overly aggressive or reckless while playing. Nobody enjoys playing against people like that, it goes for any sport. That she is not a boy and if you try to act tougher than one to prove something you'll eventually get your ass handed to you at which point you can't be upset and play the girl card or believe you are weak. Decide what type of player you are how to best contribute and be it and be happy with it.

Its funny how this pretty much matches my experience word for word. Must be common in pee wee for girls teams. They were about a year older than us and a little bigger and were constantly running us over off the puck and hitting from behind on the boards. Our coach was giving the stink eye to their coach for the 1st period and during intermission, pulled us all together and told us to go right back at them if thats how they want to play. We were already winning 5-1 at the start of the 2nd and once we started to finish our hits and play their style, they couldnt hang. Ended up winning 12-2

Deserve? In basketball girls play all the time and usually get roughed up a bit. You don't have to look any further than Dawn Staley or most top tier pro players. This just sounds like more helicopter parent/DiCaro lust for mythical fairness.

Less like the Bruins and Blues of 5-10 years ago. Don't play like an asshole, knowing you will get away with it because of your sex. Or if you are going to play like that play with the expectation it will eventually come back to you and don't cry about it like it's some indignation or injustice. Basically play like that and take it right back or don't play like that.

Taylor Lorenz, thought that name seemed familiar. She was the worst technology reporter for NYT. She didn't even know enough about tech to know when people were trolling her. It was like Stephen Glass without intention.

Interesting discussion here on girls hockey I see. My oldest is/was on a girls only mite team this season. We pretty much exclusively played against girls 8U teams. I think there was one tournament where we played a coed team. We also had 6 other mite coed teams at our rink that had between 2-4 girls on each roster. We have enough to field 2 girls only teams at each level moving up until 14U where the early birth year kids in HS jump to the HS team. I do not think we ever play against boys teams again after mites. The only time that would happen would be an in house scrimmage.

Playing with or against the boys isn't really that weird here so far but again i haven't watched much beyond mites. They have been practicing together since the Learn To Play years and neither has any problem beating and banging on one another. She has camp tomorrow night. One of the boys in here class at school slashed her last week in their scrimmage so she has been working on a hip check for him if they get grouped together again.

pee wees play check hockey, but all teams were todl that when you play the girls team checking is not allowed. So you had to tell a bunch of 11 year olds that they weren't allowed to play the way you had been teaching them to play all year. Not exactly easy for a 11 year to grasp. also it didn't help that the girls were much bigger and, at least in my game, were allowed by the ref to body my team all over the ice.

I mutherfucked the ref pretty good in a game of 11 and 12 year olds and got kicked out midway through.


Final straw for me was when the ref would literally stand 5 feet from the centers at teh face off dot and throw the puck at the ice between them for a face off. Pucks bouncing 3 feet in the air because this 60 year old ref is scared that an 11 year old might slash him by accident. This was after the ref was pretty much laughing at me for complaining that he was allowing the girls to check but not the boys.
