for me at least, third time is a charm for eggers. i didn't care for either of his two movies ("the \/\/itch", "the |_ighthouse") but this one works extremely well. mainly because it's so basic. unlike the other two films which wallow in empty-headed symbolism and metaphoric imagery, this one is just a linear story that has a lot of gore, howling, screaming, and brilliant scenery.
the visceral nature of the film is what makes it hum along, so the pacing is the best he's had so far as well. i heard he didn't get final cut of the film. and that's probably why i liked it. maybe a director's cut would look a lot more like his other films.
but i have to give the guy credit, because it's just bad ass.
the last shot, though, is almost identical to the last shot of "witch". i don't know if this is a thing with him or if he forgot that he did that...just thought it was odd.

I thought the last shot was more like the duel between anakin and obi wan.
I wanted to like this movie a lot more, but I just didn't. The uncle had already lost everything and was reduced to a petite chieftan of a small village in a desolate land. I can't be the only person who thought Fate(s) had already corrected the injustice negating the need for the story.
Was this meant to be an adaptation of Hamlet? I haven't read a review but the story line, location and his name lead me to believe the creator was using it as inspiration.
