What's your top 5?

Over the weekend I listened to a few songs off of Lies, which I had not heard in ages. Aside from the objectionable lyrics, One in a Million is a great song, even one of their best. The acoustic solo sounds similar to Jimmy Page's in Babe I'm Gonna Leave You. I have thought that Slash was influenced by Steven Stills, but you can definitely hear the Zep influence in One in a Million. For those of us that grew up with their music, how lucky we were to be able to hear GNR all the time on the radio. You couldn't put them ahead of Zep, Beatles or the Who, but I do think they were better than the Stones. Axl Rose was certainly a better rock singer than Mick Jagger with a greater vocal range.

1. Sweet Child of Mine
2. One in a Million
3. Civil War
4. November Rain
5. Rocket Queen

November Rain is my all time favorite song. It is just perfect and Slash's guitar solo in it is amazing.

Then pretty much anything from Appetite is on the list. I could listen to that album all day every day.

It's been a while since I've listened to some GN'R. A couple not mentioned that I really like and tend to fly under the radar are

Civil War
Dead Horse
Mama Kin
You Could Be Mine -- I ended up hating this when it came out because of the T2 tie in but when I go back to listen it is a fine song.

For #5 it's easy and probably more accurate to say "November Rain", but in terms of epic Songs, I really do like "Coma".

It’s So Easy -- never paid much attention to this track on jungle until after I heard Johnny Polonsky cover it opening for his brother's sorta band. Polonsky's treatment opened it up more, less muddled, more tuneful sounding. Now I hear a combination of Polonsky's cover and the original whenever I listen.

Nightrain -- classic early LA metal/punk/whatever sounding track, would not be out of place on Motley Crue's Too Fast For Love

Mr. Brownstone - duh

Rocket Queen - the ultimate power ballad

14 Years - Izzy!

Yeah Coma was a good one, it comes after Dead Horse that I mentioned before for a 15 minute epic finish to that album.

Since I Don't Have You

I have a real soft spot for The Spaghetti Incident? I wouldn't say it's better than the "real" albums, but I enjoy it more.

So many good ones.

I was always partial to Estranged. Love that song.

They really screwed up a good thing. I could have been attending their Rolling Stones-type concerts until I died.

The body of work is really lacking.....it's a shame. They really should have had more output to share.

I used to listen to Use your Illusion while getting ready to go out. Hard to believe that was 30 freaking years ago. I think their most popular or commercial songs or whatever you call them are the best ones but there is a place in my heart for You're crazy, Used to love her, and breakdown.
