I've been with the same company since 2004 but starting to get the itch to seriously look around. I have been out of the job search market for a long time. You guys/gals that have made a change recently, where have you gone to search? I am sure I need to get my LinkedIn profile looking a bit better. Any other tips?

LinkedIn is a great start. I would connect with recruiters on there in your industry if you haven't already. I've found Indeed and Ziprecruiter to be good job search sites as well.

LinkedIn is where it is at if you are looking. Those jobs boards suck, most of the postings aren't even real.

Vastly different way than we used to in 2004.

Make LinkedIn profile. Put high quality resume on there. Include nice face pic of yourself.

Find recruiter on there that works in your field.

Take highest offer. You will get many. Job market hotter than I've ever seen it.

Linked In is very important. The job market is tight. Reach out to people you know in the desired industry. Everyone is looking for experienced help.

JERRY: And it's probably a union thing.

GEORGE: Those unions. Okay. Sports,...movies. What about a talk show host?

JERRY: Talk show host. That's good.

GEORGE: I think I'd be good at that. I talk to people all the time. Someone even told me once they thought I'd be a good talk show host.

JERRY: Really?

GEORGE: Yeah. A couple of people. I don't get that, though. Where do you start?

JERRY: Well, that's where it gets tricky.

GEORGE: You can't just walk into a building and say "I wanna be a talk show host."

JERRY: I wouldn't think so.

GEORGE: It's all politics.

Once you’ve updated your Linkedin profile, there is a toggle setting to indicate you’re actively looking for new opportunities. Usually when you do that, recruiters will start contacting you.

However, if your current company recruits that way, they might be able to see that you’re looking, so proceed with caution.

I contacted 3 people about using them for a job reference. All three offered me a job. I don't even know if anyone uses references anymore. It was more so to get it out there that I was willing to make a move.

That is actually a pretty good strategy, I may use that. I work in an industry that is relatively close knit but not sure I want to stay in this particular space.

I got whacked in the middle of COVID (July 2020). Started first day at the new job Aug 26th 2020.

LInkedIn is important, but your network is more important. Start talking to any and everyone you've worked with before. Also....get as much professional help on your resume as possible.

References rendered useless by litigious former employees suing former employers for telling the truth about their bum asses. No one is willing to provide anything other than employment dates and *possibly* a generic reason for separation (voluntary, involuntary, natural end of engagement type info).

One thing it seems every employer does now is send your info to a background check clearing house which checks social media and the interwebs for 411 on you. If you have a pubic Facebook/IG/whatever profile, might check it for anything even borderline controversial and clean it up. Also, delete any old tweets quoting rap lyrics and bragging about how much 420 you smoke everyday.

Everyone is so desperate for workers all you have to do is be able to breath to find a job. I think some places may be willing to look the other way on that right now.
But to be honest I am pretty damn good at what I do.
