EPL ratings down. The American eurosimp demo is into F1 now. Trading their Tottenham away jerseys for #44 gear.

:D Been a fan of all of the top racing associations since the seventies...especially F1. Loved Nikki Lauda and Andretti ever since.

Well,
When my brother passed. One of the things I got was his music collection. One of the items was the Billboard 100 collection. It ranks the top 100 for each year starting in 20's. I started going through listening around the mid 50's. From just my taste and listening pleasure. Wow, music sucks now. Over produced and everyone basically sounds the same now. The other thing was you saw a lot more variety in the number of artists who charted in each year and decade. You had all kinds of genre and styles represented unlike now. I mean there was even 3 TV/Movie theme songs that charted.
For me the decline started late 70's. Had a little bit of a comeback mid 90's then went totally in the shitter after that.

That's what everyone said about soccer.

This. They've been saying that about soccer for at least 30 years, and I don't think it's resulted in former rec league soccer players watching a lot of soccer.

Not American soccer but I can say with near certainty that there are more americans watching/showing interest in Premier League than ever.

I assumed Black Hawk Fan was focusing in on American institutions with his original post, but I suppose you can look at it from a wider angle. What are people's thoughts on the EPL? Is this a passing fad, or is this going to be something a significant number of people are interested in twenty years from now?

I'd say the EPL is here to stay, but has peaked. It benefits from the "dynasty" nature of the top teams that are always in contention, the games really don't compete with much else, and Americans are getting more play overseas. We had a few CSFMB EPL viewing meetups over breakfast at Quigley's in Naperville like a decade ago for the early games, but they're not currently open for them.

we'll see what kind of buzz soccer can create when the world cup is played right in the middle of the NFL schedule and the holiday season

My guess is that it will rank down there with replays of A Kathie Lee and Frank Gifford Home For The Holidays special

EPL in the USA is like the NFL in the UK--a surprisingly enthusiastic core of EPL fans in the US and NFL fans in the UK sustain interest over time; but the odd friendly at Soldier Field or one-off per year Jacksonville Jaguars game at Wembley Stadium isn't enough to grow the foreign fan base much beyond the core. Siting an NFL franchise in London or a Premier League club in Atlanta (Charlotte, Seattle, PDX, other soccer interested city) would be a necessary next step to expanding the respective fans bases in their non-native countries beyond their current size. Probably not practical in the case of EPL, the quality of the live game experience would be too radically different in the US vs the UK.

EPL = excuse to drink and/or go to a bar in the morning.
