I'm shocked it took him and his lawyers this long to come out.

I think HBO will be fine. They wouldn't lose a law suit. They say it's a dramatization. Of course, if you're West, you are embarrassed. Some of his portrayal probably isn't true. But I'll bet some of it is.

Anyway, I find his character in the show funny. So I don't care if it's true or not. His character and portrayal just makes it a more entertaining show.

Ya know what, HBO is actually happy. More people are now gonna want to watch this show. So he did them a favor by crying about it publicly. From his perspective, he had no choice.

Has anyone read the book by Pearlman? How does he describe West from these years?

I am sure it is exaggerated, but would guess there is definitely some truth to it.

No doubt HBO is happy with this as more people will be watching

I'm watching the series (it's pretty good). They made West out to be a hick with a dad who beat the shit out of the family and towards his coaching career was spiraling out of control as a drunk and then continued to meddle behind the scenes.

Can't think all of that is untrue

I guess that he feels the need to take this action, but I don't really see this affecting his reputation with the people that have actually mattered over the past 60 years. Anyone who has even brought up his name has described him in glowing terms, at least for basketball.

The disclosure that HBO will run will be about it imo.

Low hanging fruit.... and I guess West just got lucky being meddlesome. In the series he says he's a terrible coach and afraid of failure. Think that's true?

Too bad Depp-Heard and West-McKay feel the need to settle personal beefs via the overloaded court system. They need to bring back dueling. Pistols at 20 paces at dawn behind the Hollywood sign.

So does this come down to him not being asked to be an executive producer or something and making some money off this? I mean even the Lakers took away his season tickets when he went to work for the Clippers.

Really? Is this what we're going to do? Tear down one of the NBA's Mount Rushmores? There's Auerbach, Russell, West, and Jordan.

Of course it's true. I mean, they make it look like a documentary and everything!

Yeah, they kinda do. Probably just an accident.

I would like to believe that Red Auerbach sent a rotting vegetable up to Buss in the nosebleeds(in honor of your coach) because that is fucking awesome!

I dont know how popular the show is . So far it's been crappy but w/ him doing this it'll have more people viewing.

I think at his age he's more concerned about his legacy and does not want people to view him as described in the show when he's no longer here.

Even if it's not true, doesn't the Hustler v Falwell ruling give content creators insanely broad purview to parody or caricature public figures? Unless HBO is selling the series as a documentary, difficult to see West doing much except spending a lot of money on lawyers and keeping HBO's lawyers busy. Even if West somehow wins a jury verdict, it would likely to be tossed on appeal under the Hustler ruling.

The ones' that should be suing are Paul Westhead and Pat Riley as they're portrayed as wussy's and losers.

Parody, huh? I think the need a better disclaimer at the end of show then.

Westhead is portrayed as an emotional toddler, dumb as a rock, and a misfit of society. If anybody has a case, it's him. Kareem and Riley don't have much of a b!tch. Taking a chainsaw to his garage is badass. Untrue, of course, but still badass.

Parody, caricature, dramatized, whatever word for fictionalized account you want to apply. I just don't see HBO's lawyers letting anything on air that's even close to legally suspect.

“All that is solid melts into air, all that is sacred is profaned..."

Just as Marx famously observed how capitalism remade the world by melting down its existing means of production, social relations, and governments to forge a new reality, so too is identity politics transmogrifying our historical understanding, social mores and ethical standards to forge a new reality within the context of global capitalism.

Winning Time would amount to nothing more than a bloated pustule on the face of pop culture if it weren't for its participation in a larger cultural project to legitimize a failing global economic system by appealing to a racialized understanding of sports, society, and every other aspect of the world around us. It is this racialization of understanding itself that helps rationalize the transformation of American society that took place with the rise of Reaganism and the birth of neoliberalism.

I s'pose you're right. Most of these guys have enough gravitas to make known what they want known. Who knows, maybe in the end it's McKay who's name is mud. He was 12 years old in 1980. I am Magic and Bird's age.

Does sound like McKay's a bit of shitheel, how do you fuck up a 25 year working relationship with Will Ferrell?

Quote:
While McKay’s interest in producing more was the start of the end, the director told Vanity Fair that the final blow was his decision to cast John C. Reilly over Ferrell in his upcoming HBO drama series about the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers. Lakers fan Ferrell was originally cast in the role of team owner Jerry Buss, but he was not McKay’s first choice.

“The truth is, the way the show was always going to be done, it’s hyperrealistic,” McKay said. “And Ferrell just doesn’t look like Jerry Buss, and he’s not that vibe of a Jerry Buss. And there were some people involved who were like, ‘We love Ferrell, he’s a genius, but we can’t see him doing it.’ It was a bit of a hard discussion.”

McKay wanted to cast John C. Reilly, whom he worked with on “Step Brothers” and who is also Ferrell’s good friend. McKay ended up making the casting change and hiring Reilly behind Ferrell’s back.

“I should have called him and I didn’t,” McKay said. “And Reilly did, of course, because Reilly, he’s a stand-up guy…I fucked up on how I handled that. It’s the old thing of keep your side of the street clean. I should have just done everything by the book.”

McKay said the last time he spoke to Ferrell was the phone conversation they had talking about breaking up. “I said, ‘Well, I mean, we’re splitting up the company,'” the director said. “And he basically was like, ‘Yeah, we are,’ and basically was like, ‘Have a good life.’ And I’m like, ‘Fuck, Ferrell’s never going to talk to me again.’ So it ended not well.”

Vanity Fair notes that “McKay says he’s written emails to Ferrell, attempting a rapprochement, but has never heard back.” The director concluded, “In my head, I was like, ‘We’ll let all this blow over. Six months to a year, we’ll sit down, we’ll laugh about it and go, It’s all business junk, who gives a shit? We worked together for 25 years. Are we really going to let this go away?’ [But Ferrell] took it as a way deeper hurt than I ever imagined and I tried to reach out to him, and I reminded him of some slights that were thrown my way that were never apologized for.”

if West wants to push it he could maybe get a jury to rule in his favor--popular sports icon vs faceless corporation. If a judge would even allow it to go that far. Maybe they could argue HBO played fast and loose with the format and made it too much like a documentary and that would be enough to get it beyond summary judgment and in front of a jury. But I still think at the end of the day/appeals West ends up spending seven figures on lawyers and getting at most 12 Angelenos to agree he was wrongly aggrieved by HBO.

So he was so concerned about making something "hyperrealistic" that he destroyed his relationship with Will Ferrell, but not concerned enough about "hyperrealism" to tell the story of the 1980s Lakers with even a moderate degree of accuracy?

This is looking better and better for West...
