Does Fields need line help? Mustipher appeared to be the weakest link last season, and outside of a shitty gameplan against Cleveland, I didn't think the line was terrible last year. We've added a fullback and coaches who couldn't possibly be worse than Nagy.

Our best player on the line last year, Peters, won't be on the team this year. The guy taking his place, Borom, was inconsistent last year and finished the season poorly. We don't appear to have identified a starting right guard, so it could be that Mustipher will start at center until Kramer is ready and Patrick will shift over. And our right tackle, Jenkins, has been singled out by Thayer for having a shitty work ethic and being soft. So, yeah, sounds promising.

There are some question marks. A run heavy offense and play action passing should take pressure off the offensive line and a quarterback who is still learning the game. Having a fullback is HUGE.

I don't believe Peters was our best last year for one. Changing the scheme and technique leaves us with a lot of unknowns. AS Nas said use a FB sometimes as well. The NFL is very strange. I will not give the Bears any credit until I see it but teams turn around O lines very quickly. They even revert very quickly like ours did only since Fox's last year.

Offenses with fullbacks can still suck. Who do you think was the team's best offensive lineman last year if not Peters? It certainly wasn't Mustipher, Whitehair, or Ifedi. That leaves us with Daniels? I don't think so.

You don't say that you are all in on a guy you plan on dumping in months. He took ownership of Fields AGAIN. Poles could have easily said that he was going to evaluate the position or used some other bullshit language.

You should listen to the interview Poles did with Mully and Haugh this morning. He's being very careful to sound extremely enthusiastic while remaining noncommittal.

Fields might eventually win Poles over (and I hope he does), bu he isn't sold on Fields at this point.

NFL.com ranked Bears 29/32 for their draft.

https://www.nfl.com/news/2022-nfl-draft ... -brightest

Rank
29
Chicago Bears
Chicago Bears

Grade: C | Total picks: 11
Round 2: (No. 39) Kyler Gordon, CB, Washington; (48) Jaquan Brisker, S, Penn State
Round 3: (71) Velus Jones, WR, Tennessee
Round 5: (168) Braxton Jones, OT, Southern Utah State; (174) Dominique Robinson, Edge, Miami (OH)
Round 6: (186) Zach Thomas, OG, San Diego State; (203) Trestan Ebner, RB, Baylor; (207) Doug Kramer, C, Illinois
Round 7: (226) Ja'Tyre Carter, OG, Southern; (254) Elijah Hicks, DB, Cal; (255) Trenton Gill, P, N.C. State

FILICE: Does this new Bears regime want Justin Fields to succeed? OK, that's a flippant question. Of course the answer is yes. But Chicago's offseason activity (or lack thereof) definitely raises an eyebrow. After the No. 11 overall pick's uneven rookie campaign -- in an admittedly unfavorable environment -- Fields lost his No. 1 receiver (Allen Robinson), his best young offensive lineman (James Daniels) and the veteran tackle who competently protected his blind side (Jason Peters). In free agency, the Bears went the contemporary Texans route, signing a bunch of low-wattage vets on short-term deals. And then in the draft, Chicago used its top two picks on defense before adding a soon-to-be 25-year-old wideout with one year of solid college production and tossing a series of Day 3 darts at a depleted O-line board. First-year GM Ryan Poles says he's not done improving the roster, but at this point, how many impact guys remain available to help foster Fields' development? Now, it must be noted that Poles inherited a roster with serious shortcomings. And it also must be noted that Gordon and Brisker feel like fine pieces for Matt Eberflus' defense. "They bring playmaking ability into your secondary, and that's huge," the first-time head coach said, via the Chicago Sun-Times. "Big, long players create takeaways, and they do a great job of playing the ball. And that's what we're excited about. Those guys will fit right in." But still, the expectations for young quarterbacks on rookie contracts have never been higher. Does Fields have the supporting cast to make serious strides in Year 2? What happens if he struggles? In today's NFL, when it comes to the game's most important position, patience is not a virtue.

Maybe Fields isn’t good and that’s Poles’ read on the guy, BUT…if you were actively trying to inhibit Fields’ development, how would you have acted differently than the Bears this off-season?

Great question. I don't understand the safety pick unless it's as you say. Unless he's the second coming of Ronnie Lott, you have plenty of time to get a safety. The Bears are years away from competing for a division title, let alone more than that. Below are the WR's picked after the Bears chose Brisker at 48 and before they picked Velus Jones at 71. It will be interesting to watch them.

Tyquan Thornton
WR
Baylor Bears
Patriots

George Pickens
WR
Georgia
Steelers

ALEC PIERCE
CINCINNATI
WR
Colts

SKYY MOORE
WESTERN MICHIGAN
WR
Chiefs

I had no idea that the numbers on the Bears pass D last year were this horrible.

https://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/b ... story.html

Even with one of the best pass rushes in the league in 2021, the Bears struggled mightily in the secondary, ranking 27th with 7.6 yards allowed per pass attempt. Quarterbacks had a 103.3 passer rating versus the Bears, the worst figure in the NFL.

Gordon, drafted with the 39th pick, and Brisker, selected 48th, visited Halas Hall for the first time together before the draft, beginning a relationship that has taken off over the last week...

Jackson, the free safety and a holdover who should be in line for a starting job, described the new defense as “simpler.”

“It’s not too much eyes here, eyes there,” Jackson said. “You just see what’s in front of you and play.”

That doesn’t mean it will be easy for the rookies to adjust, but it’s not as complicated as what the Bears did under previous defensive coordinators Vic Fangio, Chuck Pagano and Sean Desai.

Poor Justin Fields. "Why isn't Poles more effusive in his praise of Justin Fields when he REPEATEDLY talks about being committed to him?" Get the fuck out of here with that shit. It's embarrassing to see the lengths to which the Fields supporters will go to turn him into a victim.

He SUCKED last year. He should focus on not sucking and being a diva.

I think it’s more about the likelihood that the Bears are a year or two away from hitting reset on the QB position again. Poles can say whatever he wants, but his actions seem to suggest he doesn’t think highly of Fields.

He may be right about that and we could be looking at a 4-5 year rebuild instead of a 2-3 year rebuild.

We are reading the tea leaves about Poles commitment to him.

This entire narrative is complete bullshit. Poles has consistently spoken highly of Roquan, Fields, and Mooney. He hasn't spoken highly of anyone else. None of you all question if he genuinely likes Roquan or Mooney. He clearly thinks that Fields can be the answer at quarterback.

Poles is trying to rebuild a complete team. There wasn't a receiver that signed a long-term deal that Poles should have tried to match. He may not have signed any sexy names, but he signed guys that he believes can be a short-term answer. In addition to having an offense tailored to the Bears roster instead of the Chiefs roster.

Last year, I saw a quarterback who has pretty much every physical tool that you could want a quarterback to have. He wasn't close to being NFL ready, though. He came off as entitled, injury prone, his throwing motion sucked, and the game was too fast for him. Putting the training wheels on him for a season would probably be best for his development and the long-term prospects of the Bears.

It may not be sexy, but Poles approach to Fields and the roster is correct. Hopefully, he gets the players right.

It is hard to do a 4-5 year rebuild in a sport where most of these guys last not much longer than 4-5 years.

Agreed. Fields is the guy for the next 2 years. If he continues to suck, they'll draft and/or trade for his replacement. By that time, they'll have a franchise WR, and the offensive line should be stable to great.
