People that own dogs are worse, but I don't want to offend any idiots here.

Never get a dog because a woman wants you to. The relationship is already over now that she mentioned it. Just like a baby. She wants one, so you no longer matter. She will play every evil game in the book until she gets one, and soon as she has it, you will be on the hook to pay for it and deal with a lifetime of problems. Save your emotional integrity and dump her now, she's already ruined.

And once again, Darko is proven to be correct.

Some people just don't like animals or they had a bad experience.

Getting a dog 7 years ago is among the worst decisions we have ever made in our lives. Its like having a toddler that never grows up. I'm not violently anti-dog but I honestly don't understand the appeal. There are moments where I suppose I sort of understand it, the companionship can be nice, but the fun-to-work ratio is wildly out-of-whack. If we could snap our fingers and make that decision have never happened we both would in a second. That said we have him now and like it or not he is part of the family so we make the best of it, he has a pretty cushy life. I do enjoy the evening walks.

Can you elaborate about the dog being 'part of the family'. I hear that alot but don't really understand it.

And the companionship - is it really a companion or is it there because it knows you are it's daddy warbucks when it comes to food and shelter?

"Part of the family" meaning we took him into our house understanding it came with a lot of responsibility and that we accepted that. We all take care of him and have become attached, even if in retrospect I find it to be a regrettable decision. He does provide some level of enjoyment, just not enough in my opinion to recommend to people on the fence about having a dog to go get one.

He definitely provides companionship beyond "feed me bitch". We all enjoy from time to time when he jumps up next to us on the couch, or taking him to the park for a walk. Those moments are nice.

IIRC he said that years ago. He likes to say he hates _____ or has never heard of _____ just to be a tool, though, so I don't know how true that is.

we had a guy at my old job who was certain dogs could "love" he would share stories about dogs sitting at the food of a grave or some crap because their owner was buried there. i'm like well they have good noses and know that smell = food. all i would have to do is bring the dog a cheeseburger and now I have a dog.

Had a dog when the kids were younger. A boston terrier. It was fun and all but I am now firmly in the camp of dog ownership not being worth the time, trouble and expense. Especially now that it is just my wife and me. My goal is to simplify my life, not make it more complicated.

That said, I could see myself revisiting dog ownership again if I was alone and retired.

Dogs' oxytocin levels increase when they are with their owner and family. Sure, you could get our dog to jump off the couch and leave my wife's side with a cheeseburger but as soon as he's done he'll go right back to her lap. I've never seen a more loving, devoted companion as my wife's dog.

I hope Trevor Bauer doesn't have a dog.

Cats are cool. You just be cool with the cat and the cat is cool with you. My cat rules. Entertaining little fucker. Greets me at the door when I get off work. Snoozes in the bed with us. It's nice. Plus she's probably a serial killer.

Love it when you go to a dog owner’s house and the dog jumps up and scratches the shit out of you because it’s “friendly”.

That's a grooming issue. Not the dog's fault.

I don't own a dog, other than my son, and I have never had a dog at any point and time in my life. There was a time during Covid that I gave serious consideration to getting a dog. My son, sister and mom were all over this, and then I got smart. I have a lot of allergies and the main thing is, I don't want to be tied down to it. I like the freedom of my life and doing what I want.

Never liked cats, but the one my kid adopted likes to hang with me, he's fairly low maintenance, kills any small rodents that come close to the house, and is OK.

On our 2nd dog, wife grew up in a family that always had at least two, so got one as soon as we bought first house, the first one lived forever, was a Yorkie who yipped at everything and hated me, and the second one is a Maltese that is actually a fairly good guard dog for her size, she only barks when someone is near the door, and looks at me and runs toward the door whenever she smells or hears anything odd going on close to the house, and will go after any male that is not family if they enter the house. Wife takes the dog for walks and her and her cronies love to post pics on social media of their critters

That said, cannot wait to be dog free. Would strongly recommend high end, waterproof, and stain proof flooring, even trained dogs track in dirt and have accidents.

Have a buddy that lives in an old family house in a crappy part of town, his pit bull ends up scaring away would be robbers at least one a year, pit bulls are one of the only things that actually deter criminals in Rockford.

Dogs are pack animals, and as Rip Wheeler says "your either a shark or a minnow, and if you don't know which one you are, your a minnow", dogs quickly assess you and assign you a place in the pack.
