I've been doing some flying recently. Even if I don't have the window seat, I still like to look out the window during take off and landing. However, I've noticed that some people who do have the window seat will either close the shade or position their body in such a way that they completely block anyone else from looking out the window. Personally, I think that's rude behavior. Other thoughts?

Meh who cares. The seat recliners are a bigger issue for me. But I am a committed aisle seat guy.

What are you trying to do here, lean over some poor bastard in the window seat?

I'm trying to turn my head and look out the damn window, but I can't do it because somebody has positioned their entire torso in front of the window and is pressing their nose on the glass.

I am a bit claustrophobic so I always prefer an aisle, but my desire to look out the window matches yours. Further, I’m pretty certain the shades are supposed to be open during takeoff and landing for safety reasons. That said, I figure that is their prerogative view it more as a minor oversight than actual rudeness.

The purchaser/occupant of the window seat has the right to do with the shade as he/she/it/they please (except for takeoff and landing).

Is the takeoff and landing window shade really a thing? I've never been told to open or shut the shade on any flight I've been on.

Window seat controls the shade.

Middle seat is entitled to both interior armrests.

When we flew to Seattle a week or so ago I was in the middle seat and my wife was in the aisle. A guy we didnt know had the window seat. He never said a word and never asked to get up to go to the bathroom. So that was nice. But when we went to land he shut the shade. That kind of irked me as I like to be able to look out the window while landing.

there's 2 reasons why airlines (especially with a wide body) will ask the pax to close the shades. the main reason is heat - to keep it out. the wide body will need more time to turn, so, more of a chance that it could get warm onboard - before the next cycle. 2 ways to keep the plane cool - an APU will burn fuel to condition the air. burning jet fuel is no good these days and frowned upon. i remember the 727 APU being on - day after day, year after year...caused some of the old-timers to be just about deaf by the time i started working. some planes, the APU can't start on it's own, air is needed to start it. most gates in most airports have pre-conditioned air that hooks up underneath the fuselage and will cool/warm the plane on extreme temp days. if a smaller station's pre-conditioned air unit is out of service, this is where the shades are more important. the 2nd reason is for cabin cleaning. the cleaners are told to pull them down and wipe them down, but, just about all cabin-cleaners are vendors now and not as reliable and motivated as workers of bygone days.

i like looking out the window too, but when shade is down i think oh well and that's the end of it. i dont think it rises to the level of being rude.

You want to look out the window? Jesus Christ are you 5? If it's that important to you then buy a window seat.

When I get upgraded to 1st class, is it OK to complain to the flight attendant that people from the back of the plane are using our restroom?

I'm a lot better now but early in my flying days I would get a mild case of motion sickness on takeoff and landing and the #1 way to combat it was to look out the window so it's still nice to have it open for those times.

You do realize you have options to ensure you have a window seat?

I was responding to your big brain thought that only 5 year olds want to look out the window.

Not always Bob.

MANY times when you book a business flight for instance your options are limited.

I too am a committed aisle guy. But if it's just the wife and me and the other seat is empty (which hardly ever happens) I'll jump over to the window for take-off and landing. Otherwise from the aisle it is hard to see much so it makes little difference to me where the shade is.

It’s why I only take charter flights or don’t fly at all.

Jerry: What is all the racket back there? You know, you're trying to relax on the plane and this is what you have to put up with. What is going on?

Attendant: Sir, this woman tried to *sneak* into first class.

Jerry: Oh, you see, that's terrible. The problem is, that curtain is no security-- there really should be a locking door
