Watched it last night at an "early screening". Enjoyed it and thought it was exactly what you would expect for a Top Gun movie. Action, cheesy lines, and a little drama, but all well done. The crowd seemed to definitely skew towards older people that grew up with the original, but might have just been our theater.

It’s getting pretty good reviews.

I’d like to see it.

Saw it, it's fucking amazing. Make sure you go to an IMAX theater for this one.

I'm very much a proponent of the home theater, but this is the rare movie that no home theater will ever be able to do justice for so make sure you see it on the big screen for the full experience.

I won't post spoilers here, but I hope the success of this movie gets Hollywood to appreciate the power of practical effects where CGI is only used as an enhancement rather than basically becoming the entire movie.

If this movie makes you feel the need for speed, go get yourself DCS from the Steam store and purchase a good HOTAS. The F-15C module is a good starting place if you're a noob who doesn't want to put a lot of time in learning it. If you do want to devote time and energy to learning the finer points of modern combat, get the F/A-18C or F-14B modules.

I'm going to white text the following here for spoilers

I'll excuse the 1 obvious thing in the movie that had to be 100% CGI and that's the appearance of the F-14A Tomcat. Not completely unrealistic for one of those to be in the hands of an enemy state considering Iran still has a few left that are supposedly flyable. No way for the film crew to properly film one for this film as the US made sure none of the remaining specimens we have has been flyable since 2006. The Tomcat is a mean, dirty, tough to fly bird, but damn it wouldn't be Top Gun without her an appearance. Those swept wings, AWG-9 Radar, and wide separation between the two exhaust nozzles are just iconic.

Yeah I'm going to say the movie overrates the Su-57. That plane is reportedly a piece of shit that can't even sustain stable flight, which is one of the reasons Russia has essentially halted production of them and none have been used over Ukraine. Only 15 have been made and a good number already crashed in testing because they are inherently unstable.

Watched it tonight. It was amazing. Just a perfect way to close that out.

Maverick may not have given another pilot the bird in this film, but they did give the bird to China with the Taiwan flag jacket showing up prominently in the opening sequence.

Word of mouth must've spread because a drop of only 33% from week 1 to week 2 for a blockbuster is basically unheard of.

well this movie couldn't be made without pentagon approval... so why would they allow chinese influence? fuck that. it's a giant middle finger to china, as it should be.

This movie doing well is a good signal for Hollywood to notice. Americans will turn up and pay to watch a movie that doesn't bow down to Chinese censors. We'll also pay to see a movie with practical effects and limited use of CGI.

its also a reboot that has original cast members, and coming out when basically nothing else is available.

but yeah, the strong 2nd weekend means its a good movie. people spread reviews these days on social media and thats that, instant ticket sales.

we should make more middle finger movies to china. and john cena should be deported.

And just about everyone I know who has seen it went back and saw it a 2nd time. So that is helping its staying power. I am going again in the next week.

Everyone I know that has seen this says it's amazing. Maybe I'm just an angry old man, but I have zero interest. None.

It probably is amazing by comparison to the crap that's been paraded out for the last decade.

Probably going to see it this week. Would IMAX be better than Dolby Cinema for this movie?

I had a smile on my face from beginning to end. Loved it.

It was fun to see a movie about a guy that's just good at something again and isn't a God or has some crazy superpower.

Spending time scrolling through the movie services I get, it has to be better than 95% of the crap of the last decade. Even as horrible as the last Bond film was(which I wanted to see in Imax) I'm actually interested in seeing this at a theater.

Cheesy or not, it's got to be better than the dumbass dinosaur and British tv series brought to the big screen.

I'm quite certain it was determined in Top Gun that Maverick isn't merely a good fighter pilot. Rather, he's the best of the best.

I should have said the best at something.

I'm beginning to think that you don't fully appreciate the greatness of Maverick and his comrades. They are not merely the best: They are the best of the best.

No shit. That's why it's called Top Gun not Pretty Good Gun.

Only if you play by the rules, which is anathema to the best of the best.
