It's not that the Belmont had a particularly small field. It's all the other dirt races over the two day festival.

It's really simple. There are too many races and too few horses.

It depends. There's a lot that goes into the breeding business. You have to have enough power to "make" a stallion. That means getting the right mares bred to him. You could have the greatest stallion that ever lived but if he isn't supported by the big players in the industry, he's going to fail.

Showing two year old speed is critical for a stallion prospect. And the conformation is important. For example, if you have a successful racehorse that bangs his shins, well, he's living with the conformation flaw that is causing that. But I wouldn't expect his offspring to live with that same flaw and I would expect him to pass that flaw on. The fact that he was exceptional doesn't mean you would want to buy his sons.
