Why? I'm sure they're trying to insert clauses that will impact his $$.

Probably so. It's just a bad look for both sides. Hopefully, they get it done before training camp starts for real.

All in all, I think 6th in the NFC is fair to Kirk. I might take Dak over him, but Dak can be injury prone. Murray at #5 is too much of a flake to trust as your franchise QB.

If you're looking for a comparable AFC QB, consider the Raiders' Derek Carr. Both veterans are undeniably starting material who've proven they can be highly efficient while seeking the big play. Both have also struggled to win when it matters most. In 10 years, on multiple lucrative deals, Cousins has secured all of one playoff victory. That's not all his fault, but it's indicative that he's a steady QB more than a special one. It's possible the Vikings' transition from old-school Mike Zimmer to young offensive mind Kevin O'Connell will further unlock Cousins' ability, especially with elite weapons like Dalvin Cook and Justin Jefferson on his side.

Pro Football Focus ranked the Vikings as having the 15th best Receiving group in the NFL.

15. MINNESOTA VIKINGS
Justin Jefferson has already comfortably established himself as one of the league’s best wide receivers. He leads all players at the position in PFF receiving grade against press coverage since 2020 and has proven he can win against any type of coverage from both the slot and outside.

However, the Vikings don’t have a particularly deep group beyond Jefferson. Adam Thielen is turning 32 years old in August and coming off his lowest PFF grade since 2015 in a season limited by an ankle injury. Beyond those two, Minnesota will be leaning on the likes of K.J. Osborn, Albert Wilson, Ihmir Smith-Marsette and Irv Smith Jr.

The rest of the NFC north was as follows.

Lions 21st

Packers 31st

Bears 32nd

The Vikings rank 4th overall in running backs according to PFF.

4. MINNESOTA VIKINGS
The biggest question with Dalvin Cook heading into the 2022 season is the same it’s been for the entirety of his NFL career: Can he stay healthy?

Injuries took their toll in 2021 and were reflected in a career-low 65.8 PFF grade. However, Cook is one of the best zone runners in the league when healthy. His 90.3 rushing grade in zone schemes since 2017 leads all running backs. Alexander Mattison, a fourth-year running back out of Boise State, provides quality depth behind Cook and is capable of stepping into the lead role if needed.

The rest of the NFC North.

Packers 3rd

Bears 16th

Lions 20th

The Vikings rank 19th overall in Offensive Line according to PFF

19. MINNESOTA VIKINGS
Projected Starting Lineup
LT: Christian Darrisaw
LG: Ezra Cleveland
C: Garrett Bradbury
RG: Ed Ingram
RT: Brian O’Neill
This could sneakily be the best offensive line of quarterback Kirk Cousins‘ Vikings career. Much of that, though, comes down to the development of the team's 2021 first-round pick, Christian Darrisaw. Darrisaw earned a 71.9 overall grade on 652 snaps last season and got stronger as the campaign wore on.

The rest of the NFC North

Lions 3rd

Packers 5th

Bears 31st

The Lions are 3rd? Who do they have on the line that is so good?

3. DETROIT LIONS
Projected Starting Lineup
LT: Taylor Decker
LG: Jonah Jackson
C: Frank Ragnow
RG: Halapoulivaati Vaitai
RT: Penei Sewell
With three first-rounders, a third-rounder and a highly paid free agent along their offensive line, the Lions look primed to recoup big time on their investments in 2022. They not only have high-end talent in Frank Ragnow and Penei Sewell, who both can be top-five players at their respective positions, but they also don’t have any glaring holes. Big V was the unit's lowest-graded starter last season, and he still earned a 68.4 overall mark.

PFF ranks the Vikings defensive line 12th. But, having to go back to 2019 for stats to defend the ranking is concerning.

12. MINNESOTA VIKINGS
Minnesota’s defensive line could have some volatility based on the health of their starting edge duo of Danielle Hunter and Za’Darius Smith.

Hunter appeared in just seven games in 2021 (torn pectoral muscle) after missing the entire 2020 season with a herniated disc. Smith is also coming off just 37 defensive snaps last season, dealing with a back injury of his own. The downside is that neither is able to come back at full health and remain on the field. The upside, however, is two of the more impactful edge rushers in the NFL threatening offenses on a down-by-down basis. Smith and Hunter ranked first and second in quarterback pressures back in 2019.

Most quarterback pressures during 2019 season
Player Pressures
Za’Darius Smith 93
Danielle Hunter 88
Cameron Jordan 83

The rest of the NFC North

Packers 3rd

Lions 26th

Bears 31st

And the Bears ranking is with Robert Quinn. No Quinn and they might be ranked the 32nd unit.

Brad Biggs
@BradBiggs
Matt Eberflus says he basically has no comment on Robert Quinn not reporting for mandatory minicamp. Says he will leave it up to GM Ryan Poles to deal with that.

There are many things that can be debated when it comes to Kirk Cousins’ play at quarterback. But the one thing that can’t be questioned is his durability. Since taking over as Washington’s starting QB in 2015, Cousins has missed only two of 113 regular-season games.

The 33-year-old sat out the final game of the 2019 regular season because the Vikings had clinched their playoff position and coach Mike Zimmer did not want to risk getting his starter injured in a meaningless game. Last season, Cousins missed the Vikings’ penultimate game at Green Bay because of COVID-19 protocols. Cousins, though, has never missed a game because of an actual injury.

It appears new general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and coach Kevin O’Connell are confident Cousins will continue to be an ironman. Veteran backup Sean Mannion has returned to hold a clipboard and serve as a confidant to Cousins. Mannion, 30, has started three games in six seasons, including two with the Vikings. The second came in Green Bay last season and served as a demonstration of just how much trouble the Vikings are in when Mannion is asked to play.

He completed 22 of 36 passes for 189 yards with a touchdown in a 37-10 loss at Lambeau Field. Mannion’s future in the NFL is probably in coaching, but Cousins is comfortable with him around and that matters to those who run the team.

The other option is 2021 third-round pick Kellen Mond, who completed 2 of 3 passes for 5 yards in a brief appearance in the same game Mannion started. Mond had to learn the Vikings’ previous offense last season and is now learning a completely new scheme under O’Connell. It was clear that even the slower-paced practices run by the Vikings in minicamp were moving too fast for him and expecting him to play this season seems like it would be a enormous ask.

This raises the question about whether the Vikings will go get a veteran with more starting experience to back up Cousins. Dan Graziano of ESPN recently talked to NFL executives, coaches and agents to get their opinions on where available veteran quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Jimmy Garoppolo might land, assuming they aren’t back with Cleveland and San Francisco, respectively.

Graziano wrote: (The Vikings are) set this season with Kirk Cousins but could move on from him after the year. This is an example of a place where Mayfield or Garoppolo wouldn’t start right away but could position himself as the team’s starter in 2023, the way (Jameis) Winston did with the Saints in 2020. That could be possible elsewhere, including with the Buccaneers, Eagles, Cardinals, Titans and Raiders.

The odds of Mayfield or Garoppolo landing in Minnesota at this point are probably less than zero. Cousins signed a one-year, $35 million contract extension in March that will take him through the 2023 season and has a no-trade clause for ’23. He will earn $40 million this coming season.

That means Cousins almost certainly won’t face any competition for the next two years. O’Connell seems convinced he can get far more than impressive statistics out of Cousins. Is this wise? Perhaps not. But the Vikings have picked their path and providing Cousins with any type of legitimate competition, or even trying to motivate him with a capable starter behind him, isn’t the plan and likely wouldn’t work.

But if Cousins gets hurt, the Vikings’ season will be a complete loss. That’s a chance Adofo-Mensah and O’Connell appear willing to take.

@WillRagatz
Justin Jefferson turns 23 today. He’s the first player in NFL history to reach 3,000 receiving yards before turning 23, and no one has more yards since he entered the league two years ago. What will he do in year 3?

You are happy they are lining up the best RB in the game (when healthy) at WR?

That sounds like an OC outthinking himself

If the Bears get a running back good enough, you will see it also. Getsy will have it in the arsenal.

I'm happy if he plays all 17 games even if it means he carries the ball less. The leading rusher on the Rams didn't even average 15 carries per game. If Dalvin is closer to 20 than 30, that should help him stay healthier. I guess we'll see how many times he lines up at WR. That might be more for show than anything.

Fair enough. I see where the Bears are a hot betting favorite at 6.5 games for those taking the under. They should beat the Vikes in Chicago at least.

I think Poles is sandbagging his head coach and will fire him after two poor win-loss seasons.

Poles is sandbagging his QB, not his coach. There is zero reason to doubt Eberflus is who Poles wanted....well...other than the fact that it's the fucking Bears.

I don't think Poles had any say in who the finalists were. I think he may have been able choose his hire once it was down to 3 candidates or so vetted by Pollian. There was no sense that Poles was able to bring in a candidate of his own choosing. George was structure and discipline and that's what he got in Eberflus. Larry and Bernstein alluded to all the new front office hires being brought in for the 'next coach'...I guess meaning, more analytics are not Eberflus's cup of tea. Time will tell.

PFF has Vikings secondary at 18th.

18. MINNESOTA VIKINGS
CB: Patrick Peterson
CB: Cameron Dantzler
NCB: Andrew Booth Jr.
S: Harrison Smith
S: Lewis Cine

The Vikings have quite a dichotomous mix of veteran talent with rookie top-50 picks. The biggest worry, though, is that age. Once considered elite players at their respective positions, can 33-year-old Harrison Smith and 32-year-old Patrick Peterson still be relied upon?

Rest of the NFC North

Packers 4th
Lions 25th

Bears 31st

31. CHICAGO BEARS
CB: Jaylon Johnson
CB: Kyler Gordon
NCB: Thomas Graham Jr.
S: Eddie Jackson
S: Jaquan Brisker

It's worrisome that this Bears secondary lacks a single player who they can point to and say for certain he’ll be reliable. Eddie Jackson is supposed to be that guy — and is being paid as such — but even he has earned coverage grades of 56.9 and 55.8 the past two seasons.

PFF has Vikings LB's at 5th

5. MINNESOTA VIKINGS
In Eric Kendricks, the Vikings have had a superb all-around linebacker for years. Kendricks' grade did falter in 2021 — a 59.9 mark that was down from 82.6 and 90.1 the past two years, respectively. A new defensive coordinator and scheme will help him, though. The Vikings also brought in the underrated Jordan Hicks from the Cardinals in free agency.

Rest of the NFC North

Packers 4th
Lions 28th

Bears 18th

18. CHICAGO BEARS
Roquan Smith has had an up-and-down NFL career so far, and the team will be hoping he can bounce back from a 47.1 grade last season. His past two years against the run have been horrid, with him posting 39.8 and 30.0 run-defense grades. Chicago signed Nicholas Morrow from Las Vegas to fill the spot next to Smith for 2022.
