Which football rules are you playing with?

Not really. The kids would just die with the old rules or be paralyzed for life.

Wasn't the pace of play about 50% higher than it is today?

Couldn't have been. Guys back then could barely walk down the court. Seems impossible.

Everyone got raging boners when in the dunk contest MJ ran the length of the court and dunked the ball from about 2 feet in front of the free throw line.

The NBA had to implement the rule that a free throw shooter couldn't cross the line before the ball hit the rim because Wilt used to just take a giant step or two and dunk a free throw..

This is just one of many rule changes that had to be implemented because of how incredibly talented a basketball player Wilt was, and how incredibly athletic he was.

I'm not saying Wilt would score 100 points today, but I'm saying he'd do just fine today.

So you think that a degraded film from 60 years ago shows what was really happening? Guess what? Babe Ruth didn't really tip toe around the bases like his shoes were tied together either.

I'm not saying the rules weren't different. For me, I'd rather watch a 140-138 game without constant shorts and jersey grabbing and hand-checking. But that doesn't really speak to the abilities of the players. I'm sure Bob Cosuy could grab shorts with the best of them if he could get away with it.

He only averaged 19 rebounds a game in the last year of his career. Playing 45 minutes a game for his career in arenas without air conditioning was probably easy too.

I think you would have to be insane not to have Wilt in your top 5. He's probably no worse than top 3.

One season Wilt averaged 48.5 minutes played per game.

Wait for it, wait for it...

Agreed. That's not even a debate. Athletes today are insanely in shape compared to 40 years ago. Look at the playoffs... These days they look like feral alley cats fighting for their lives. It's insane. Tapes from the 70s are nothing like that. Maybe harder hitting at times, sure, but that's just rule changes.

I was reading or watching something about how great he was at track and field. It's really amazing considering his size.

I’m as big a Jordan Stan as you can be.. but I laugh when people realistically think he’d avg. 50 points a game in today’s NBA.. 40 I think is possible (he averaged around 37 ppg at one point I believe) but even 40ppg is kind of ridiculous.. I think 35ppg sounds about right as MJ would adjust his game to the modern standard and wouldn’t want to burn himself out trying to get 50 a game.

As for Wilt? I think he’d be HoF level in any era but his stats would be far under what he was able to achieve in his day when he was for a period of time one of the only 7 footers and the competition pool was much much smaller.

With the way they play defense today it would be easy as hell for Jordan to average 40 per game.

You think any of the efficiency/analytics types would’ve tried to move him off the mid-range game?

No. He got any shot he wanted then, it would just be any shot he wanted on steroids now. But that's not to say he wouldn't be in the gym at 3AM firing 3s up. He wouldn't be able to help himself being great at those too.

Jordan would clearly have to shoot more three point shots than he did in the 90s because it's more important now to do it. By the 90s, he was a pretty decent low volume three point shooter.

As for the midrange game, they'd tell him to move off it but like Durant he would ignore them.

NBA evolution is amazing. It worked rapidly during the forty years between Mikan and Jordan and then abruptly stopped, perhaps even to a point where players have devolved over the next forty years. Was Jordan the peak of basketball skill evolution?

They would have but I don't think he would changed his game all that much.

25 years ago there were only 9 guys that averaged 24 points or better per game. In 2021 there were 20.
If that doesn't illustrate just how easy it is to score these days nothing else will.

I think it's time to stop laughing, man. Teams are averaging 120s per game. Not uncommon to see teams hit the 130s. In that context you can def have a scorer as talented as Jordan average 40 - 50.

Scoring was high in the 80s, dipped in the 90s, slightly increased in the 2000s, and exploded in the 2010s/2020s
