Most the guys who would have had value have expiring contracts (no cost control) or are underperforming.

Cubs should have sold everyone in 2019 while they still had value to other teams. Now you're screwed with no good path to rebuild.

They planned on launching with the full team and then selling. But they didn't think Sinclair's purchase of WGN wouldn't go through (costing them negotiating leverage) and then they couldn't have predicted COVID.

Hoyer mostly targeted guys who do not need to be put on a 40 man roster before a work stoppage, or guys on a 40 man like Madrigal and Crow-Armstrong who are recovering from surgery and could use an extra couple of months to recover.
