It sounds like the secondary is significantly better and this defense could be really good.

Secondary, yes. As for the overall D, a lot depends on when/if Roquan is back and whether we get 2021 Quinn and not 2020 Quinn.

Should be interesting.

Courtney Cronin
@CourtneyRCronin
Eberflus said first-team offense and defense will play 'a good amount' in the Bears' first preseason game against Kansas City.

The interior DL seems average at best. If the ends don't produce, this defense will be really bad.

I expect an NFL quarterback to connect with a wide-open receiver when he's under no pressure.

Not an unreasonable expectation, but it doesn’t change the fact that it happened during a meaningless practice in late July early August.

To be fair, I’ve at least been consistent with my comments about most things pre season -even last year when we were hearing good things about Fields during practices I didn’t put much stock in it, and still don’t. We have to see what this looks like when there’s something at stake.. one thing I will allow to form my opinion a bit more is preseason games, but even that doesn’t have much true game planning, scheming, or enough time for players to get into a rhythm because the starters spend short stints on the field then get pulled.

Also, as I said earlier.. I’m not sure what we should expect, the Bears are depleted of legit talent on offense and a bit on defense.. got little from the draft, and did little in free agency. I’d love nothing more than to see improvement but if we’re being realistic we have to admit out situation. Fields may just not be very good to go along with all that. But.. we aren’t going to know much until they start going up against opposing teams.

I mean, be honest, would you be high on them if their practice were going great or good? I wouldn’t, because they could still line up against their opponents and go 4-13 or some shit. ‘I mean, we’re talking about practice..’

We know that Fields struggled with reading defenses last year and continues to struggle with that this year. That ain't good, and it can't be written off as "it's only practice" since this issue is recurring.

Sure. But it’s early in training camp with an entire new staff, this is the time to make mistakes and so on -they’re learning and adjusting to all the new stuff. I’ll worry about it when it’s happening during games. If Fields turns out to be bad, it won’t be because he looked poor in practice, it will be because he looked poor going up against opposing teams.

According to everyone associated with him, Fields has an "insane" work ethic and has been "killing himself" to improve since 10 days after the end of last season.

The fact that he has shown no progress so far certainly doesn't portend well for him.

And that’s why I don’t pay much attention to what people say (right now during practices and such).. only what they do matters.. and the timing for when they do it matters too. And for me, that time is when we see them up against actual opposition.

I acknowledge -completely- that Fields just might not be very good, but I’ll wait to come to that conclusion when this thing goes live. As always, I’m just going to try and be patient and let them do their thing.. but I’ll be right in there with you if this thing looks like shit during the season, no doubt.

Can we all agree that the biggest concern with Fields is that Ryan Pace believed that he was good?

If he can't throw well consistently in practice, it's sure not going to happen in games where the pace is faster, the play is more physical, and the defensive looks are more complex.

That is definitely not a positive for him right now.

I want to see him in actual games before we say whether he has progressed or not. It doesn’t look good for him so far.

At least it seems like the kid is working hard to better himself. But sadly that does always work.

I'm with you on the games comment.

Mac Jones was praised by Bill B before camp, and hasn't had a good showing so far.

This quarterback class may have the experts reevaluating how they project these guys.

Some quarterbacks need a lot of game action to improve. Maybe that's the case with Fields. But it's evident that he's stagnated as far as delivering the ball in rhythm goes, which means we may still not know if he's "the guy" until late this season or even later than that. If that's the case, the Bears may be drafting another QB in the first or second round in 2023.

The good news for Bears fans is that the team's schedule is so weak that Fields may be able to put up a decent amount of points with runs, rollouts and play action. He won't need to be an elite pocket passer to clown a lot of the clowns the Bears will be playing in the fall.

This is a worst case scenario disguised as a best case scenario.

What is even more likely to happen is Fields blowing an ACL in week one and missing the season. No one thinks about this.

I think they are going to run the ball a lot and use a lot of play action until the game slows down for Fields. They'll know if he's the guy before the season is over.

Hoge says that Fieds was so bad in individual drills today that he couldn't even hit the netting surrounding the basket that the team uses for QB accuracy drills.

They really have no choice other than to run the ball since their QB can't throw well from the pocket.

That does seem to be the plan, getting subtle tells on what they want to do from who they are giving reps to on the Oline and from inadvertent slips from the hapless Bears media dudes during podcasts.

This group has shown to be fairly ruthless in evaluating talent and has no problem moving on from guys that do not fit what they want to do, would expect Fields to be no different, and with tons of cap space and likely a very high first round pick available next year it is likely they move on from Fields if he does not show he is they guy and start the rookie contract clock on another first round QB.

I'm willing to cut him slack because it's a totally new offense.

And because the system he was forced to operate in last year would have had problems scoring at the high school level.

It’s also training camp. Ideally you’d like to hear how well he’s doing but it’s not a real environment no matter who’s catching the ball or defending.

Once he’s on a field with 11 guys who are allowed to hit him, then we’ll see.

Yeah, but the new offense shouldn't impact his ability to read defenses.

The plays he is running now have different progressions then what they ran last year.

That takes some getting used to.
