NCAA

Tennessee -16 over NIU

Vols hung tough with Auburn last week and are too much for the Huskies in Knoxville.

Under 60 1/2 Indiana @ Minnesota

Indiana won't put up enough to make this one go over.

Vanderbilt +3 1/2 vs Auburn

Upset pick of the week in the SEC.

Kansas -11 @ Iowa St.

Jayhawks have too much offense and will hammer the Cyclones in Ames.

Over 56 1/2 Oregon @ USC

USC will come out fired up ready to light up the scoreboard.

NFL

Over 33 1/2 Titans @ Ravens

Defensive struggle, but enough to get past the over.

Chargers -6 1/2 @ Dolphins

Miami can't pull the upset in consecutive games.

Broncos -3 vs Bucs

Bounce back game at home for the Broncos.

Over 41 Patriots @ 49ers

Pats need to make a statement by getting their offense.

Cardinals -1 vs Bills

Tough for opponents to win in Phoenix, Bills get their first loss of the year.

For NFL, I would like...

Arizona (Pickem) over Buffalo
SF +3.5 over Boston

I'm not betting on Iowa this week, but I know some sharpies who are. Certain indicators make this a good week to bet on the Hawkeyes. Not many teams are 9 point chalk one week and 8 point dogs the next. I know Vince loves the guy, but the evidence is starting to mount that Kirk Ferentz is one of the most over-rated coaches in America. The media loves the guy because he had a few good years and he takes all their calls, which might be partly responsible for why he's gotten such a pass from them over the last few years. If a company missed expectations as much as Iowa has recently, the CEO would be gone. The fact that there doesn't seem to be a lot of heat on Ferentz is part puzzle and part testament to the fact that the media doesn't objectively critique and publicly criticize guys they like.

Should have bet on Iowa Coast.

Iowa has 4.5 Million reasons why Kirk will be there coach for at least another 1 year plus. I do expect some shakeup in the staff this year - that's got to happen.

I think that's significant, my bet on Arizona, but even more significant is the role that the people of America are not given to those hands of Ahmadinejad, not that he would use them, but that he would use them. The Cardinals will not allow terrorists to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so I pray for that. Hightower should be able to push across the line again. I see the running game that we're on, reform of Warner and it's about putting government back on the side of the fact that energy is a stinking corpse and should be inherent in corporations who are extreme, and they do not let them come over here and attempt again what they accomplished here, and that important an issue like this also and I agree with Larry Fitzgerald.

NFL From Pinnacle Sports

Texans +3 vs Colts- The Colts may have got things worked out during the bye, but so far they look bad and I think playing at home helps the Texans.

Titans -1 vs Ravens- I think the Titans will shut down Flacco and the Titans will get to the magic number of 17 points to win this game.

Chargers -6.5 vs Dolphins- It may take some time during this game, but I think the Chargers are starting to rev the engines to make their run.

Lions +3.5 vs Bears- I think the Lions will play their best game all year with no Millen and give the fans some hope.

Patriots -3 vs 49ers- I would think during the bye, the Patriots practiced on how to get Moss the ball and get this one.

Jaguars -5 vs Steelers- I just think the Steelers are beat up a little, and the Jaguars are another team that starting to turn their season around.

I have found something I agree with Sarah Palin on:

Arizona -1 (bodog)
Actually, I bet them on the moneyline at -120, but for purposes of this contest, -1 is fine.

SF 49ers +3.5 vs. Pats (beted)
Thanks to the guys who turned me on to beted so I could add another out to my list and grab the hook there. It's a flat 3 everywhere else. Last year, I was wondering how high to rate the Patriots. At one point, I had them at 90 on my rating system. Right now I have them at 75. That means this Pats team would be getting 15 points from last year's Pats team. And that may be too high if they keep playing like they did at home vs. Miami. Three weeks ago I picked up Matt Cassel on waivers for my fantasy team and several guys told me they wanted him. Now I can't even dump his ass even to guys who don't even have a healthy quarterback. They would rather get 0 points from an injured QB than take Cassel. How times change.

Thanks Rick. I don't know that JoePa "ignores" off field issues as you suggest, because he has suspended guys about as much as many coaches. THey have had issues and bad actors, no question. My impression though is he has dealt with them by suspending guys about like most coaches. The difference is he doesn't seek style points from the media about how he publicly talks about his miscreants. He doesn't let the media spend time in his press conferences talking about it and he doesn't talk about it publicly much. That may actually be a good thing for his team and a positive and professional way to handle things, rather than being a media whore about it. My impression of JoePa is they have screwups and they deal with them. And when they screw up, Joe is not going to drag the kids through the mud by repeatedly talking about their screwups no matter how much the media asks him the questions. I'm not sure it's ever a good idea for a coach or manager of any organization to throw a player or worker under the bus...regardless of how much fans or the media expect them to do just that. He's kicked some kids off the team and he's suspended some, depending on their violations. I just don't see that as being "ignoring" the issues.

JoePa does seek style points from the media. Take a look at his "clean the stadium on Sundays" punishment and how the media ate it up. It still didn't stop more off the field issues. I don't really want to bash PSU, as I have great respect for them and they probably have the best fans in the Big Ten. I hope PSU wins out from here.

Yeah I have one more question. Is it a smart strategy to have coaches announce they are retiring after "next season" and then let them play out the string in their last season? Purdue has now allowed both Keady and Tiller to do this. And while that's not a lot of evidence, it sure doesn't seem like either team played/is playing very hard for those lame duck coaches. I've seen teams, particulary college teams, win one (game) for the gipper. Asking them to win an entire season for a coach they know is going to be gone next year doesn't seem to be working very well.

I think the Keady transition plan was a resounding success. It was going to be tough no matter how it was done. There was little talent on those teams and the cupboard was bare. In hindsight, it was about 4 years later than it should have been. I'm not sure if it was about playing hard for those teams, but talent. As for the actual transition plan, Matt Painter used his year as an associate head coach to recruit heavily and convince a bunch of top 100 talent to come to a school that was down to buy in to the system. Given where Purdue was during Keady's last season, I think the turnaround has been as quick as it could have been. If I could go back and change anything I wouldn't and I don't think any other Purdue fan would.

As for football, it would be quite a leap of faith to think that the transition plan will work as well as it did in basketball. So far, besides some talk and some early signs of "Hope" it isn't really known what is going on. We won't really know how successful the transition plan is until we see how recruiting goes for the class after this one as he'll have had ample time to make contacts with recruits earlier on. Matt Painter was able to use the transition plan and sell the program. So far, I have to grade this plan as an incomplete but I am excited to see what Danny Hope can do. This season seems to be the start of another rebuilding mode.

This whole notion that coaches..like Tiller for example...should be able to decide when they retire on their own terms is a bunch of BS. Who else in America, other than these egocentric coaches, can control their retirement date when their job performance is not meeting expectations? I said four years ago Tiller should have been gone when he repeatedly missed expectations and his teams played below their talent. Of course, I said the same thing about Joepa too a few years ago. That the game had passed him by. Tells you what I know.

I think you have to understand the mindset of most Purdue fans. I'm lucky. I became a Purdue fan and 6 months later they went to the Rose Bowl. I missed the 30 years of bad, big ten bottom feeders. Joe Tiller saved the football program and the financial viability of Purdue athletics. At schools who have had tons of historical success, just going to a bowl isn't good enough. At Purdue, when it was a rarity before, it became standard. This was clearly bad thinking and has caused the last 4 years of stagnation. Unlike the basketball program, I would go back and change the coaching situation after the season they didn't go to a bowl game.

I'm ready to see a Purdue team not coached by Joe Tiller and the one good thing about the predetermined end to his coaching career here is that I can go to a game and enjoy it without worrying that he won't be fired.

From either Oddsmaker or SBG

Detroit +3.5 over Chicago

Dog covered every Bears divsion game last year. Dog is 3-0-1 in Bears games this year. Dog is 3-0-1 last four between these 2 in Detroit. Bears had a physical game against Philly last week while a winless Detroit team had off. Detroit getting their 1st win of the year wouldn't suprise me.

Over 43.5 Sea/Nyg

All 3 Seattle games have gone over. Giants over in 2 of 3. Winning team in the high 20's.

Under 42.5 Was/Phil

Most pts scored between these 2 the last three times in Philly has been 34. Philly D has been great at home so far giving up 3 and 6 pts.

Not to toot my own horn, but in Purdue's 20-6 loss, the backup QB threw a pass to the one yard line and then our running back scored while down 20-0 in the fourth quarter. Please ignore the fact that our kicker missed an extra point to make me right. :)

Miami Dolphins +3.5, first half vs. Chargers
With a game line at 6.5, I don't want to bite on the dog, but I like the hook for the first half. This is one of those early east coast starts for a west coast team. It may not seem like much and we may think that football players should be able to play a game even if it's 10 am on their body clock. But a lot of guys are sluggish in these situations and this SD team has shown it themselves in the past. Chargers started slow last week too vs. Raiders. Again?

Dallas -16 over Cincy

Dallas loss last week means they will be focused today. I think Dallas can reach 40 today.

Over 46.5 Tb/Den

Denver has gone over every game, Tampa over 3 of 4.

Over 44.5 Buf/Az

Even without Boldin I think Arizona can reach the high 20's.

Saints -3 vs Vikings- I like Drew to pass the ball all over the place against a non pass defense the Vikigns have.

Saints and Vikigns over 46.5- Like I said in the previous line, I like Drew to pass the ball, but I also think Peterson has a 3 touchdown game, but Brees passes more for a score of 31-24.
