My wife is adamant about taking her kids on a family trip after her son graduates tech school this spring. We've been to a number of nice resorts in Mexico just the two of us but looking for someplace that is pretty good and more reasonably priced. Any suggestions you have been to in the past? We are leaning towards Cancun but open to other suggestions, especially if the pricing is right. We don't care about the beach, especially since that area is notorious for seaweed. Nice pools, strong drinks and good food is pretty much what we are looking for. Thanks in advance.

Hedonism II. It’s got the wild women, the wild women. The rippin and the tearin.

I vastly prefer the Tulum area to Cancun.

Forget the all inclusive resort and book a cruise on a premium line like Celebrity.

The food and entertainment will be better.

By entertainment do you mean watching 3000 pre-diabetics gorge themselves at the all you can eat buffet?

We might look at that but I honestly don't trust the kids to be on time to catch the boat at any stops and I honestly don't need the stress on vacation. If we can find a place to set up camp for 4 days and then let them do what they want from there I think that would be easier for us.

 It's essentially all you can eat and drink without the joy of listening to whining, crying or obnoxious little kids. Sometimes you have to deal with drunk adults, but that can happen anywhere.

We just booked Secrets in Cap Cana in the DR. Since I have yet to go there, I cannot weigh in on its quality but it was a top pick on Trip Advisory.

I have gone to all inclusives for years but not really to adult only ones. In my experience, everything in Mexico is weaker than other places. Most resorts have the same problems, pretty crappy liquor and food that gets boring by day three. The biggest exception is Beaches in the Turks. The Hard Rock in Punta Cana was a close second. Most of the rest are like I said.

It is tough to get cheap all inclusives especially with flight costs today. And of course you get what you pay for food and drink quality wise. Mexico has the cheapest and plenty of good areas, but you would be better off going to a non all inclusive and venturing out to local restaurants to eat. The breakfast buffets make me gag at most of these places.

That is why I was asking if anyone knew of anyplace off the radar. I don't have an issue paying a bit more when it is just my wife and I but when we are paying for 4 people, am willing to take a step down to make it a bit more affordable. We are not really interested in even going off the resort, but the kids likely would. I'll take a look at the ones you mentioned at some point. You are correct on the airfare. Years ago the airfare was almost a throw in just to get you down there, now it is a big chunk of the price.

I was surprised at the total cost for two, which was close to what I used to pay for four. We are going for seven nights the first week of November.

Haven't done used them in the DR, but did a Secrets in Puerto Vallarta and another in Montego Bay and both were top notch. Beautiful grounds, awesome service, drinks were good, and there was quite good food available if you searched a little.

Some of the entertainment was cheesy as to be expected, but on some nights they had some pretty good shows or outside troupes doing their thing.

Not sure how a breakfast buffet could make anyone gag. The usual bacon, sausage, egg, potatoes, pastries as staples, with MANY other items available.

The breakfast buffet is great on day one. You go up there and grab all the stuff you like the most. Then you do the same thing on day two. By day three, you are sick of it because you have tried everything.

I much prefer places that have menus that you order off of. That way you just eat one dish, and then try new things each day.

Buffets are fine for a meal or two. Not for the entire trip.

Buffets (breakfast, lunch, dinner, or Jimmy) are all terrible.

But, as a non breakfast eater, every AI I've been to has also had a cafe that I could get coffee and a donut at and get on with my day...so that's been nice.

Not really. At U of I, we told people what suburb we were from because it seemed like half the campus was from the Chicago burbs.

The reason suburbanites tell people they are from Chicago is because when you travel out of the country or somewhere like NY, no one knows Naperville or Schaumburg. I continue to be baffled why you city snobs worry that us Mecca folk say we are from Chicago or even worse from the fictional Chicagoland.

And they all say I am from Chicago. I politely explain that I am from Chicago in every part of the world but Chicago. To that end, we were sitting at a bar a few months back, and a retired Chicago firefighter was talking to us. The person I was with told him I was from Chicago, and he said “oh yeah, which neighborhood”. After I said Schaumburg, he said “that is not Chicago”. The person I was with said “damn you weren’t kidding”.

Lol city snobs.

I've repeated this plenty of times I am sure but the strangest phenomenon at Purdue was asking someone "Where are you from?" and they respond "Chicago" and I say "City or suburbs?" and they say "The Region".

You aren't even in the same state as Chicago. You're a suburb of Gary.

Not really. You decided to parade around Europe with your mother in law. Others might decide to sit on a beach at an all inclusive. Still others will go fishing while at Disney World.

Chocolate, vanilla.
