The Bears don't want it because of the injuries it causes. Despite how Soldier's Field looks, it doesn't blow out knees.

Modern turf is like a foot deep and soft as a gym mat. Ever walk on it? There's no way anyone would say it's worse than dirt. If you get hurt on turf, it's because you're not used to it, that's all.

I think there are instances where it doesn't release cleats. These aren't contact injuries. There's give and take with every surface. I imagine field turf is cheaper than replacing your sod 10 times a year.

The cost of a playing surface should never factor into a decision whatsoever.

If you can’t afford the best possible surface every week for your billion dollar athletes, you shouldn’t own a professional football team playing in an upper end high school stadium you rent from a bankrupt city 8-9 times p.a.

The flaw in that argument is the Bear's routinely have a dog shit grass surface. If it was nice they would have a point.

The shit surface looks bad, but it isn't causing noncontact injuries.

Does field turf cause injuries?

Some of the data says that it increases the chance of noncontact lower body injuries.

What data and when was it collected? Does field turf installed in the last four or five years pose the same danger as field turf manufactured 10-15 years ago?

Surprised more teams haven't gone with the uneven field that is mostly spray painted sand and dirt.

And wasn't one of the flimsy arguments the joke Park District give was that field turf would preclude them from trying for international soccer games?

i think it has more to do with consistency. the more turf games, the less chance your guys get hurt because muscle memory. every grass surface is different and thats why people get hurt.

at the end of the day, the bears are profitable and upgrading the grass wouldn't result in more ticket sales.

Wait, the Park District actually owns Soldier Field? And the Bears rent out the stadium?

Wait…but that means…no…no. It can’t be. It just…no.

Be an interesting test for the weird plastic substrate they were talking about in the article vs traditional cut sod. I'm sure the sod people would have preferred another week or so though.

Fox just showed the ground crew manually squeegeeing the field. It doesn’t seem to drain very well. This is going to be a mess if the rain continues.
