yeah, they rightfully should make a stink. even tho I like having so much history in one location. if Egypt or Greece or Italy or wherever wants their shit back, the Brits probably should cough it up.

The British museum folks at the time we visited were fond of telling visitors "what you see is only a fraction of our complete collection" like most museums, they only have room to display so much at one time. They mentioned having tons of stuff in the basement but also a lot more off-site in warehouses. How much shit did they steal from all these folks? There were like 10 people in Ancient Greece and Amazon Prime had yet to be invented--still they have room after room full of their artifacts on display, plus more squirreled away.

Dunno if the Brits could even work out compensation for the stuff they took--how do you put a price on, say, the Rosetta Stone?

Alaskan Cruise is awesome. We are already planning another one. Just make sure your cruise includes going to Glacier Bay. Unbelievable.

She just got too old to live. My mother-in-law is about the same age as the Queen and she's dying of nothing too. There isn't anything drastically wrong with her, she's just old. Anyway, I loved the Queen. When I was running my construction company, everyday at 4:00 p.m. we would gather in my partner's office for tea. He would pull a photo of Elizabeth out of his drawer and set it on top of the table along with the various teas.

It would be strange if it actually happened. No way this was a daily occurrence.

dont museums share that kind of shit, though? Like, London will have it for a decade and then ship it over here to the field museum for a decade and then on and on and so forth

Nope. It was strictly used at tea time. It was framed too.

if they return something to egypt or greece, then they'll find themselves returning everything to everyone. i don't think they'll do it - not even a loan period. a good chance the 'loan' will never return to england.

the parthenon (lord elgin) marbles and other parthenon sculptures issue is a hot one. it was the turks who allowed lord elgin to hack them off and ship them to england. best that the thieves and vandals be english and not turkish. history has shown us what the turks did and have recently done to an iconic structure in agia sofia.

I think U.S. museums share out exhibits of their wares with other U.S. museums. SUE the Field's prized T.Rex travels around quite a bit. But maybe dinosaur bones more hardy than ancient Greek clay pots and Ming Dynasty vases and jewelry and what not. Artwork/paintings and maybe sculptures ok to ship around the planet for traveling exhibits. Not sure they'd wanna put priceless antiquities on a boat or plane and send them across the ocean or wherever. Plus like NWsider notes--if Britain lets it out of the country, they might not get it back.

Good points. The Brits have been solid stewards of the items now through a few centuries and two world wars that left the continent rubblized. Still, maybe they could work out jointly operating a museum in each of the relevant places and share custody or something. But, yeah, Britain probably going to take the NRA negotiating approach on this and not give an inch. The U.S. is constantly returning items we took back to Egypt et al, so at least they have that.

I've probably been to London a dozen times over the last 30 years. Sometimes it's only been for an overnight, stringing together a frequent flier award to London to a late morning arrival and then a paid plane ticket from London City Airport the next evening. Other times it's been for 5-7 days as my only destination.

I did almost all the historical stuff on the first two or three trips, repeating some stuff because I had different people with me. I used to do a lot of the walking tours (London Walks) to see different neighborhoods and get different perspectives.

My last trip there was in January 2020 with one of my relatives who had also been there many times. We didn't get near any of the historical tourist areas, but just stayed out in the neighborhoods and used their train and bus system to go from place to place. Toured Wimbledon, went to a couple of ethic working class areas in southeast London looking for pubs and microbreweries as well as a good Sunday dinner at a non-exhorbitant price, and hung out a lot in the Hammersmith area where I typically have stayed for the last four or five trips. In most places, we were the only Americans around. Then we went to Dublin for 48 hours and flew back to the US from there.

Then again, this is what I do almost anywhere: find the neighborhoods, see how the locals live, try not to be an obnoxious American when outside the country. It's just that London is such a massive city with such a good train system that it's easy to go there every couple of years.

agreed, the english in all their thievery and vandalism, have been solid stewards of priceless items. when gathering all these items, their engineering and preservation techniques were light years ahead of everyone else. i say that with no cynicism or sarcasm. that's just how things worked and people behaved for centuries.

i've been to england a few times and haven't been to the british museum. i've seen the antikythera mechanism and my first thought was, "why isn't this in the british museum"? does this wonder device lose status due to it's not being housed by the english?

At this point in time isn't the president meeting the queen about the same as the prime minister meeting one of the kardashians?
