We look back on success and treat it as if it was historically inevitable when, in reality, so much of it is based on an opportune moment or time. I don't think he is such a business genius that if you started him from nothing again that it would result in huge or even modest success.

Just like Musk, he did enough revolutionary things that I think you have to give him credit. The best thing Amazon ever did was Amazon Web Services though obviously the bookstore that sells everything and gets it to you in as quick as a day is the most well known thing.

Compare that to Zuckerberg, which basically was just the winner of the 50 or so early social networking sites because college kids liked it and it's virtually the exact same site today with every other part of it outside of Facebook Marketplace being a disaster and now he is throwing huge money at the terrible looking Metaverse he thinks we will all be jumping to live in instead of our normal lives with graphics that look slightly better than a 90s video game.

I consider Musk to be a different animal because his undertakings have been so wildly divergent with needs/tech that are highly speculative. He always seems to be on the edge of either another 10 billion or bankruptcy. I may be looking at this simplistically but everything Amazon does seems ancillary but naturally related to the core.

Bezos follows the trends while Musk sets them

There is some truth to that.

Amazon does use the main company more than Musk does. Amazon Web Services, if it was it's own company, would be bigger than IBM and certainly more important.
