I miss that.

That is what horse racing feels like to me.

Bruce Roberts introducing Phil's call of the feature and then after that was done showing the best PGA putt of the day that "had eyes.". That was Sunday night sports, not this ESPN talking head shit.

Don't worry, Doc. I'm gonna hook you up in the Iroquois, the 9th race at Churchill tomorrow. It's the first race on the Derby trail.

3, Damon's Mound is likely to be the favorite. And 9, Echo Again will be pretty short priced as well. But I think the best horse in the race is the 6, Jace's Road.

My God, Jace's Road was pounds the best and Geroux just butchered him.

He's the best two year old I've seen so far. He just kept trying and trying. The way he cleared space was impressive. He moved the 8 horse out of his way with sheer presence. I thought he might win even after everything that happened but it was just too much to ask after battling the 3 and 9 early. Those two finished up the track.

I think I can get into this sport/entertainment experience.

They have actual tractors to move the gates on the track. Looks to be an old closed cab IH with duals on it.

It is sublime.

Not sure I'm using that correctly.

But we could certainly use an interjection of enthusiasm in this here thread, so please keep at it...

Get ready for the Little Brown Jug on Thursday, Doc! You'll actually see them race twice in one afternoon.

Is that because I'd be so drunk that I'd be seeing double or...oh, I get you.

Thomas Hennessy was the patriarch of the family two doors down in our cul-de-sac...he was a slugging lefty in the Red Sox organization before being drafted into the Korean War...married a woman with MS...spent his days toiling in the Chicago Public School system as an engineer

...anyway, he grew up with Phil Georgeff, and when the were growing up as kids Phil would call kids bicycle races on the street where they grew up...

swear this story was more interesting when i started typing

That's a good story. Guys that wanted to be race callers from the time they were kids are a special breed.

Q: Let’s talk about your race calls. Do you have a favorite?

“I would have to say that not only was it my favorite race call, but the Jug that Wiggle lt Jiggleit beat Lost For Words was my all-time favorite. If I were to show someone who was new to the sport what harness racing was all about, I would go to that race. From the three eighths these two were toe to toe. At the top of the lane it appeared that Lost for Words was going to win, but WIJI was not going to accept losing. It was the ultimate in competition. There are a lot of people who think Falcon Seelster’s race on Jug day was my ultimate call. It was well anticipated that Tom Harmer, Falcon Seelster’s trainer/driver was going to try to get a new world record on him in that race. I spoke with Tom the night before the race and he timed each of the first three quarters for me. He was right on the money with each of the quarters. I asked Tom about that last quarter. He said, ‘That will be up to Falcon Seelster.’”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvzj_bFa9bE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DH9ZMCksHNo

It's interesting that when Falcon Seelster set his record in 1985 a mile in 1:51 on a half-mile track was unheard of. Just shocking. Thirty years later 1:49.3 was fast but not really eye-popping. A lot of changes over that time, the removal of the hub rail, lighter, faster racebikes, and to a lesser degree tirty years of breeding.

Am I a racist if I bet on a horse called Eye Eye Indian?

I just mean like...more of a racist than I currently am....

I know you're busy helping to keep capitalism running, but if you get a chance Thursday try to check out the Jug races from Delaware, OH. The best comparison I can make that you'll understand is that it's like the Bristol NASCAR race. Nothing else like it. I think Night Hawk has a pretty good chance to win and he probably won't be favored.

I do the absolute minimum required. That's what people expect, I assume.

I will check that out. I may have some time on Thursday.

Feels like these odds are very random. It's like I'm gambling on these races.

So are these like super short races? Like a sprint?

Or a short track for many laps?

BTW, Fields not getting that TD, and it was a TD, cost me $600.

But I will accept the apology tomorrow from the NFL because that’s equivalent.

Also, if you can help me out Thursday, maybe you can pull some strings and get Tall Midget to halt the means of production on Thursday so I can do some horse racing.

Short track. Two laps. Just like Bristol, they claim to be the "World's Fastest Half-Mile". The turns are banked up so it's like a soup bowl.

They bank the turns in a horse race? LOL.

It's quite a thing. It's a town of 40,000 and at least that many come to the fair. People chain their chairs to the fence all year to secure their spots. The whole town closes down on Jug Day. The drinking starts around nine in the morning.

I got in the booth with Tony Salvaro a number of times over the years at Maywood. One particular night we are looking at a cheap claimer race and we are talking about the race and Tony says I have no idea who wins but I know the 7 will be gunning for the lead. Why is that Tony? Oh Claude Spann will be driving like he stole it (Claude was black). He was right.

In the offseason Tony had his own booth in the simulcast center and he would often be heard on the phone talking about college basketball bets.

I keep winning. Why do I keep winning? I clearly don't know what I'm doing.

Alright, let's really test this out. 22 minutes from now in Australia. One of these owners has my actual name. We're probably related.

Australia has been good to me this past year in the NBL. Let's see what happens.

Don't try to drag me into a political discussion.

But, if I had a guess...I blame Pontius Pilate. He set a standard for bad calls.

I don't need luck.

I'm an American guy of Irish descent betting horses in Australia with owners that have my Irish surnames.

It writes itself.
