U2 - 'All That You Can't Leave Behind' and 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb'

 this has to be a joke, right? Pick any 2 other albums, prior to 1992-ish, and they are better than these two. (*The mid-late 90's, not good years for U2)

No joke my friend...the only album I would say is better is Achtung Baby, and Zooropa wasn't nearly good enough to make those two the best back-to-back efforts.

I guess I was talking 10+ years before all of those.

U2's best B2B effort is The Unforgettable Fire & The Joshua Tree
Those 2 albums along with Achtung Baby are iconic.
The rest is just nice catalog filler.

AC DC's Highway to Hell followed by Back in Black.

Great albums on their own merritt but to make this quality with twodifferent singers is incredible. Not a bad song on either one.

My dark horse is Rush's Permenent Waves followed by Moving Pictures.

I cannot believe there is no more love for mychoice. I'm a big fan of some of your choices but how can you argue with the song quality and the small issue of replacing one of the BEST front men if Rock history. Replacing him with Brian Johnson who was a no name. SOLID SOLID SOLID!

I agree with you. Both of those are fantastic albums. The key to AC/DC remaining successful was that they found the perfect guy to take over for Bon Scott. Not many bands can, or even want, to find someone to replace an iconic member of their group (as with Zeppelin with John Bonham and Queen with Freddie Mercury). And yet, AC/DC overcame it.

"The 2 albums by William Hung."
that's an odd nickname.

I have to ask, did you really like Opiate?

Opiate's the shit. The only thing wrong with Opiate is that it's too short. But every track kicks ass.

I have to agree Opiate is a great album for my money its even better than Undertow.....

I had a friend once, he took some ecstasy.
Tried to marry me and everyone in the room.
He was sorta loving, kind of caring.
Kind of tried to f**k my lazy-boy.
He got a bit messy all over the curtains,
Armchair covers, throw pillows, and carpeting

Im not saying Opiate was the worst album, but for whatever reason I just don't find myself ever listening to it. I was listening to Lateralus and 10000 days quite a bit the past few months and they have both really grown on me. When I tried listening to Opiate today, I just felt eh.

well, yeah...it's like 16 years old.

i think what makes "best back to back albums" is when the artist's creative growth surprises (but not overwhelms) the listener while maintaining some semblance of what the band was previously. Tool, for whatever reason, have done this better than most (if not all) "heavy" bands.
metal, hard rock, whatever the hell they are.

now, we all have our favorite albums....and could rank them in order. but, i think (if you are a fan of this "style of music) you would be hard pressed to find another band that has consistently delivered.
not every "metal" fan is a fan of tool, but i think "we" all respect the shit out of them.

more so, than like....

i don't know...

metallica.

at least until Tool releases "Re-Tool" in 2013.
