I find it amusing that MANY are remarking on the great weather in Florida in a thread about a hurricane hitting...(checks notes)...Florida.

Per Pfizer Rick, GREAT WEATHER, is the only reason people are fleeing to Florida..zero other factors.

Seems people would rather risk dying in a Hurricane than living in a socialist state.

Unless you are making athlete/Denni$ money, you aren't really saving by moving to Florida.

It's plausible...

If you don't think the weather is the primary factor in the decision to leave the Midwest for Florida then go ahead and feel that way.

Outside of the lack of income tax and significantly lower property taxes and somewhat lower sales tax....I mean not sure about your situation, but if I were there, I'd be looking at a savings equivalent to the price of a small car each year between those 3.

We'll put you in the "people haven't been moving to Florida for decades because of the weather" column.

We'll also put Bob in the "people like it when their houses are on fire" column.

Well, you would likely make less in Florida. There is an $11k gap in median household income. The overall cost of housing and utilities is more in Florida. As well as the cost of food and most goods and services. Unless you make well over six figures, the income and property tax savings would be eaten up quickly.

Unlike Illinois, Florida is a welfare state. Florida receives more federal aid than they pay in federal taxes. Likely due to the fact their citizens make significantly less money.

And demographically they have 40% senior citizens. There's lot of ways to slice the data. I'm fortunate to work for a company that if I picked up moved, I take my salary with me. My property taxes are nearly 12K in DuPage county for what I consider a standard 4 BR home. I'd see some benefits. Just waiting to get kids out of HS and deciding on a landing spot.

If you consider Social Security that people are forced to pay into "government aid", that's correct. Otherwise it's just a dumb Dem-o-rat talking point.

That's great it would work for you. My point was that the increase in other areas and a lower salary could make relocation a net negative for many people.

I don't think my kids are coming back after school. Unless they all live in the same area, I'll probably die in Illinois. I still like our cold weather.

6 figures doesn't even pay well in Wisconsin anymore. Everything is so fucked

Florida is probably the only place where your 5 minute snow shoveling technique would actually work in 5 minutes.

Getting crazy. Sustained winds of 150MPH (sustained means winds of X MPH for 60 seconds or more). Gusts up to 190MPH.

I would think each state is a bit different. Population size, age, land, economic opportunity all play a factor. FL has a lot of olds in it so their healthcare bill would be high as would natural disaster money and maybe even federal land money. What Nas is saying might be more true of state like KY.

If these rankings are accurate https://sipanews.fiu.edu/2021/03/24/202 ... nt-states/ Florida is 34th overall and 30th for people.

It also doesn't take the state debt or anything into account which I think would help get a clearer picture of how well the state is really doing. Ca ranks low in assistance and has the largest economy. I don't think it's very well run and it would be hard to live there even with a decent middle class income.

She's not thrilled with the food options, but she loves everything else. I'm heading back out there in a couple of weeks with some Chicago goodies.

Depending on where in AZ, housing prices have skyrocketed terribly. Have some family there. My brother in law bought a house sight unseen for 500K and it wouldn't sell for more than say 400K here. Just crazy.

I have a friend in the Phoenix area who is currently married because "it's cheaper".
