'Gangsta's Paradise' rapper Coolio dies at age 59

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Coolio, the rapper who was among hip-hop's biggest names of the 1990s with hits including “Gangsta's Paradise” and “Fantastic Voyage,” died Wednesday at age 59, his manager said.

Coolio, whose legal name was Artis Leon Ivey Jr., died at the Los Angeles home of a friend, longtime manager Jarez Posey told The Associated Press. The cause was not immediately clear.

Coolio won a Grammy for best solo rap performance for “Gangsta's Paradise,” the 1995 hit from the soundtrack of the Michelle Pfeiffer film “Dangerous Minds” that sampled Stevie Wonder's 1976 song “Pastime Paradise."

He was nominated for five other Grammys during a career that began in the late-1980s.

I picture Frank in 2005-2006 screeching this tune, with a tear in his eye, wearing his Konerko jersey while delivering a pizza.

I agree and continue to be surprised by how many people try that song, it is where recreational karaoke singers go to die. I most commonly see groups of intoxicated people scream it together - safety in numbers.

Recently I heard a dude do Louis Armstrong flawlessly. You would have never guessed he could pull it off with his regular voice. Everyone stood up and clapped when he was done.

Singing karaoke when you really don't know the song but think you do simply because you can read the words off of the teleprompter is actually kind of fun.

I agree. Its cool to have people that can actually sing, but when you get too many people who seem as if they are actively seeking record deals it kills the fun. Get drunk, get up and there and make an ass of yourself, and then sit the fuck down.
