I am on a short driving trip to Savannah and Charleston and had WH for breakfast on Friday and today (Sunday). Double hash browns scattered well smothered, side of bacon, no eggs, coffee. $10.25-$11 after tax and tip, which to me seems crazy expensive until I see that a 20 oz bottle of Diet Coke is $2.29 at most gas stations.

I once picked up my son from school and turned around and drove 3 miles back midday because I thought it'd be the last Waffle House I'd pass.

And Spaulding, I've had the same problem with hash browns. I may switch to clarified butter or bacon fat.

yeah it could be the fat and heat but also the water content of the potatoes. I don't know if soaking them and draining them would work. Paying attention to the type of potato is key too. Starchy like russet will give you crispy but you have to find a way to get the water out. When it comes down to it I'd rather go out for breakfast. Potatoes are funny fuckers.

Potatoes, biscuits, gravy, and toasts are an after thought for me. I want my eggs and meats and cheese to be good.

I was told hash browns come out better if you flash boils them for a minute in water that has some vinegar. Then go ahead and cool as normal.

Yeah, I'll never understand willingly eating that gruel.

If you soak it over night in yogurt, banana milk, or chocolate milk and then add fruit, jams, pudding mix, or whatever to it it's pretty good. I've learned to like it. There is nothing that can help malt o meal or cream of wheat. That's the real enemy.

A lot of the plant milks are pretty good. If you do a half sweetened one with half unsweetened and add fruit I think you are in pretty good shape.

The mistake many people make when cooking hash browns is moving the potatoes around too much, as if they are sauteing them. Try to leave them alone for as long as possible and then flip just once.

Agree and then they really do take forever. I use my blackstone and try and spread thinly as I can to make the process a lot quicker.

My wife was in New Jersey for a wedding over the weekend. Saturday morning, her sister and her got up and drove an hour to Bethlehem, PA for the nearest Waffle House. That was about the only point all weekend I was jealous I wasn't there.
