Everybody pick a driver each week. Nobody picks the same guy, picking is first come first served. The thread will be posted weekly AFTER QUALIFYING. Then, starting with the first Chase race at New Hampshire, the posters shall be assigned to the driver corresponding in the NEXTEL CUP standings. They keep this driver for the duration of the Chase. The players will also get to pick a driver out of the Chase to make things more interesting. And rack up the points for the championship.

For the second driver picked each week, you cannot pick one of the leftover chase drivers. The chase drivers not picked are effectively dead to us. Until they wreck out your guy and then you'll wish they were someplace else.

Rain cancels Cup activity at LMS, lineup set by points

By By Joe Menzer
October 9, 2008
06:24 PM EDT

CONCORD, N.C. -- Steady rain that lasted most of the day with little interruption washed out most of Thursday's activities at Lowe's Motor Speedway, including qualifying for this Saturday night's Sprint Cup Series race.

The starting grid for the Bank of America 500 thus will be set according to the NASCAR rule book, awarding the pole position to points leader Jimmie Johnson.

"I didn't do much [Thursday]. Seven laps in the Nationwide car, looked at my Cup car, ate a bunch of junk food in the hauler -- and now I guess I'll go home. I wish I could say I did more," Johnson said.

Rain limited the time on the track to just a handful of laps for Nationwide Series cars on Thursday. Scheduled Sprint Cup practice got washed out altogether.

Kasey drove the #9 Budweiser Dodge into victory lane on Memorial Day Weekend at the longest race of the Sprint Cup season, the Coca-Cola 600, also at Lowe's Motor Speedway. With that in mind, if he's available to be picked, I'll take another Dodge driver. SHARK will take a chance with the #12 Alltel Dodge of Ryan Newman Saturday night in Concord, NC, weather permitting.

CATFIGHT!!!

Edwards, Harvick get into altercation at LMS garage
Incident stems from multi-car wreck at Talladega

By Raygan Swan, NASCAR.COM
October 9, 2008
11:30 PM EDT

CONCORD, N.C. -- Carl Edwards has a lot going on, as if chasing Jimmie Johnson for a Sprint Cup championship wasn't enough.

Carl Edwards has had to mend fences with Roush Fenway Racing teammates after wrecking them at Talladega last weekend. He also was under heavy criticism and name calling from fellow Chase driver Kevin Harvick, who was incidentally collected in Edwards' wreckage. That was then.

This is now. Edwards was bombarded with questions regarding a physical altercation that broke out between him and Harvick inside the Nationwide Series garage Thursday at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The dispute resulted in a dented hood on Harvick's No. 33 entry, according to a Nationwide Series driver who witnessed the scuffle.

When asked to address the issue, Edwards said, "The deal with me and Harvick is between me and him and there's nothing else to talk about. We know where each other stand and that's it."

Witnesses said Edwards approached Harvick in the Nationwide garage and the two exchanged sharp words, after which Harvick turned to walk away and Edwards grabbed him. Harvick then turned and shoved Edwards onto the hood of the No. 33 car, after which a Harvick crew member placed Edwards in a headlock.

At that point the altercation apparently was broken up. Officials from NASCAR had no comment, stating that the incident is a non-issue.

With six wins this season, Edwards was thought to be a championship favorite. But now he is 72 points out from Chase leader Johnson, a margin that was widened after Edwards' overly anxious driving in Talladega last week.

Edwards was pushing his teammate Greg Biffle down the back straightaway and into Turn 3 when his No. 99 spun Biffle around and collected several other cars (watch video).http://www.nascar.com/video/cup/2008/10 ... ostPopular

"I looked at the tape last week," Edwards said. "I ended up getting too far off center from his bumper. I had no hint of the loose characteristics and I just got too far off center. It happened so quick we were both surprised. It's a bad feeling."

His anxiety has yet to subside. Refocused maybe, but not gone.

"After that race I wish we could've started this race as fast as we could get here. That's how racing goes. When it's not going so well you just want to go race and get back on top so I'm excited about this race," he said.

While Harvick was less than forgiving, criticizing Edwards for hanging in the back all day during the AMP Energy 500, playing it too safe and calling him a "pansy," Biffle said he understands.

"All we can do is learn from it and go on and move forward. There's nothing I'm going to do about it now, I've lost the points, we've wrecked the cars and it's going to do no good to point fingers," Biffle said. "I'm not mad at Carl. Carl made a mistake. I watched the tape -- he was over-anxious or over-excited ... I'm not mad at him."

Edwards said he has a lot of intensity on the track, evident by his banzai move on Johnson in Kansas two weeks ago, another incident for which the driver was criticized.

"I go out there and race as hard as I can and sometimes it doesn't work out," Edwards said. "This is me and how I do things and it's been a good year."

Still, Edwards is regretful.

"The first thing you think, man, I lost all these points, but then the worst part of it is what happened to Travis [Kvapil] and Greg and Harvick and Dale [Earnhardt Jr.] and Matt [Kenseth]," Edwards said. "It ended up costing a lot of people. I've been got up in wrecks and I can tell you that starting them is the only thing worse than getting caught in one, that's for sure."

Edwards is ready for the dust to settle and get back to business, winning his first Cup championship, a feat that seemingly was within reach in 2005 but the first-year driver lacked experience.

"I was real naïve in 2005 as far as points are concerned. I didn't even know what we had there, you know?" he said. "I think now I'm more grateful for sure and I think I'm in a better position now."

Some racing veterans say you have to lose a championship before you can win one but Edwards isn't conceding this year.

"You can't count Jimmie out," Edwards said, before adding, "He's an unbelievable competitor but we are not far enough back yet."

It was the heat of the moment between Kevin Harvick & Carl Edwards, who are also competing in tonight's Nationwide Series race, the Dollar General 300 at Lowe's Speedway, airing @ 7p on ESPN2. It seems Harvick & Edwards were at odds over the 12 car crash Edwards apparently started before the controversial finish of last Sunday's AMP Energy 500 at Talladega. Based on what I have read, a heated argument between the driver of the #99 Office Depot Ford & the #29 Shell Chevy took place in the garage during practice for the Nationwide race, and that a member of Harvick's crew had Edwards in a headlock, according to witness accounts. Paging Vince McMahon, paging Jerry Springer...

I'm not particularly a fan of either driver (in fact, Harvick is probably my least favorite, and "Cousin" Carl is rapidly heading that way in my book) - but it's probably a real good thing that somebody from Harvick's crew grabbed Carl from behind in a choke/headlock until security could intervene. Edwards would completely kick Harvick's ass without breaking a sweat - and then use his other arm to kick Delana's over-rated ass as well.

Carl Edwards is one of NASCAR's biggest stars. All the commercials he's done have made the driver of the #99 Office Depot/AFLAC Ford Fusion not just a fan favorite on the Sprint Cup & Nationwide Series circuits, but very attractive among advertisers. Don't believe me? CNBC.com's Darren Rovell wrote a blog early in the season concerning Carl's mainstream appeal among advertisers and how he could branch out like fellow drivers Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart & Kasey Kahne in commercials beyond NASCAR-related programming...

For the second week in a row, rain has washed out qualifying, this time at Martinsville, VA., which means Jimmie Johnson & his #48 Lowe's Chevy starts on the pole for the Tums QuikPak 500 Sunday opposite the Bears/Vikings & NFL Week 7 under NASCAR rules. Thought you'd want to know ahead of time...

City, it only seems fitting that Tums is the title sponsor of Sunday's Sprint Cup race, especially after the flops of Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin & other "Chase for the Cup" drivers last Saturday night at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte at the Bank of America 500. I'm waiting patiently for the new post to open concerning Sunday's race, hoping that Edwards & the #99 Office Depot Ford bounces back to stay in the "Chase"... I already know which non-Chase driver I'm taking...
