I'm still not understanding the "wrongfully detained" claim by the White House. No one has disputed the fact she was found with illegal drugs. Someone here in a previous thread made the point that we have convicted and jailed Russians on DUI charges that probably seem ludicrous to people from that country, where a BAC of 0.08 is present just waking up.

They have had news stories here about people from PA also being over there in similar circumstances. Even having the media and politicians pay any attention has already gotten her special treatment. If Russia says no to make a point or not what the hell can you do? It is the height of arrogance failing clear torture to demand special justice in a foreign country.

Do you think it would have been in her best interest to deny it? Everything I’ve read said her best chance of getting out of it quickly was to admit it and get sentenced as soon as possible because the precedent is that they won’t do a deal for you until you’re actually found guilty.

Yeah, to clarify, I in no way agree with a nine-year sentence for cannabis oil, and I am assuming she was guilty of the charges (per Russian law).

Also, there are other Americans in Russia (such as white male Marc Fogel) serving time for similar offenses, so it's not like Griner is unique in that regard. I haven't heard the White House complain that Fogel has been wrongfully detained or even attempt to negotiate a release/swap on his behalf.

I wish Griner the best (especially now if she's going to a labor camp) but don't like the favoritism.
