I assume this is in reference to a football announcer giving the time left on the clock. Zero is a number, not a time. It's like asking why we say five thirty instead of 5-3-0 when someone asks what time it is.

That's not the point though, and I'm not sure what you mean by the 5:30 example since "five thirty" is a perfect translation of what's before and after the colon separating the hour and minutes.


Think of it this way: you're teaching a kid or a new English speaker how to tell time. How do you explain to them that we use a letter instead of a number when saying 2:04; that it's actually two o four, not two four or two zero four, or whatever. This issue is as important as the next set of elections.

Military folks got it right it looks like. They say zero in their rendering of time. They don't go snowflake and use the alphabet.
