The Sun Times described it differently in the first paragraph of the story, so the reporter and the headline editor don't seem to have the same opinion of the incident as reported. Best to go with the opinion of the person who did not do the fact finding and whose job it is to get people to be interested only after reading a few words.

Well, as we all know, in the political realm, there are lots of types of speech not covered by the 1A, and for good reason.

There are civil issues, too; you can get sued for various types of harassment, and workplace toxicity and bullying might even be next.

Outside the realm of politics, it's also pretty clear that the media controls much of the narrative we hear. Even when they are on the level, the media writes a shitty first draft of history.

Psychologically, most immature people seem unable to deal with bullying or demeaning language; one of the hallmarks of becoming mature is to find a way to deal with this. But for the immature, especially kids, many uses of language can be devastating and abusive. I realize that ya gotta figure this out, but it's hard to ask kids to do this.

The "hurt your feelings" argument is strawman. There are actual consequences to language, and some are really harmful. Others, you are expected to be able to deal with them, if you're an adult.
