I don't think Grandal's knees can take 81 games behind the plate, especially if you want him to hit. I'd say he catches once a week, occasionally twice depending on matchups, plays first once every couple weeks, and DHs about once a week, sometimes twice. You can probably get him about 400 at-bats that way without killing yourself defensively.

As far as getting another catcher goes, I don't really see the point in trading for some guy who isn't really better than Zavala. I know he isn't Johnny Bench, but Zavala is a young guy who should be coming into his prime. It usually takes catchers longer to develop than guys at other positions. He's already a little better than average defensively and he has room to grow. A lot of catchers have really come into their own when they hit their early 30s. And least season on a team that obviously lacked leadership, Zavala was a guy who showed some despite being one of the less heralded guys on the team. I'm fine with him catching 120 games this season.

That said, Jansen would definitely be an upgrade, but I'm not sure what you'd have to give up for him. I don't really trust Hahn the Con to make a good deal.

2nd base, like last year, is barren. There's nothing out there.

I didn't want Correa at that price. TA7 is cheaper and better.

Zeby has a lot of swings and misses with heat right down the pipe. I see that as a pretty bad sign.

I get it. But it's like buying a shitcoin in crypto with 1/3 of your assets last summer. In a decade, it won't even exist.

I think Grandal or Jimenez won't be around next season. I'm leaning toward Jimenez. There aren't enough DH at bats to go around for this team of designated hitters.

Nah. Jimenez is a win for Hahn so he’s not going anywhere. I think it’s more likely they eat some of Grandal’s salary and dump him on a team in need of a DH.

Maybe there's a deal to be had with Toronto where they wouldn't even have to eat much or any money. Something like Grandal and Henridcks for Jansen and Merrifield.

 If Grandal gets 400 ABs this is a 73-75 win team at best. That guy is done.

He's certainly done walking, so yeah, he's probably in big trouble. I doubt the Sox will have an 18 million dollar "depth" guy, so either he or Eloy will be gone.

Agreed.
Grandal has to be heading out of town. If not, this team isn't gong anywhere.
Eloy is the DH.
They desperately need to address catcher and 2B.

I'm not sure that's right. It could be. But it won't shock me if Grandal has a good year.

What is a good year for Grandal? Playing well for 6 weeks instead of 2 or 4?

It would shock the shit out of me.

He was having trouble keeping up with even low 90' fastballs last year

The catcher market is closed unless they either get the Mets to eat 70% of McCann's salary, or trade Hendricks for Janssen plus a couple of prospects in their 15-20 range.

It's hard to hit anything with bad knees. We'll see if he's healthy and how he does if he is. Maybe he can't be. I don't know. But I'd draw a line through last season if I were betting.

His entire career is based on drawing walks and waiting for cookies. That's just not going to happen anymore.

I've been doing a bit of research and think that the Sox should call the Mets and go after one of their young catchers in their farm system. They can also look into maybe getting McCann back. They need to make a couple of trades using Vaughn, SHeets, Burger, Roberts, Giolitto and/or Lynn and Hendrik as trade bait. they need a right fielder and a second baseman and no over-the hill crap that they've shoved out their. The only guys who are untradeable to me are Jimenez, Cease, and Anderson.

Why not?

I can accept Seacrest's premise that he may have lost his ability to catch up with the fastball. I'm not sure if it's true or not. We're gonna find out. It makes sense that a 33 year old 's reflexes may have slipped just a tiny bit which is all it would take to get him run out of the game. But I don't believe he's lost his ability to control the strikezone.

He can't or won't hit early in the count. Stone pointed it out half a dozen times. Pitchers just stopped being careful with him and it worked out for them very successfully.

Can he go up there thinking "swing"? I don't think so, because he's made his living walking and hitting .230. Baseball Reference has made a fairly sad projection for 2023. So this isn't some kind of 50/50 thing. I think we'll find out right away in April whether you can put a line through 2022. Cuz pitchers will continue to go right at him.

It's hard to hit anything with bad knees. We'll see if he's healthy and how he does if he is. Maybe he can't be. I don't know. But I'd draw a line through last season if I were betting.

His entire career is based on drawing walks and waiting for cookies. That's just not going to happen anymore.

Stone absolutely hates Grandal (at least the current version). You can hear it every time he opines on the team’s weaknesses.
