This is where I am. 2022 was the only full MLB season where the guy was above average offensively. Strikes out a TON, doesn't walk a bunch.

In 2021 his OPB was barely above .300. The defense is nice, but of all the SS guys signed over the prior two years the Cubs got the least proven and probably the worst.

I thought this article from a month ago was well balanced:

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/how-much-should-we-believe-in-dansby-swanson/

If he can generate that Steamer projection and be as durable as he has been so that the Cubs don't have to have a McKinstry type on the roster and can roll with just two utility players, a guy who can play three of the four corners, and a backup catcher, that should improve the bench production. At that rate, he's worth $24M a year in this market, especially for a team without any stars.

'23 projected vs '22 OD lineup
Once Heyward & Schwindell left '22 might be better

Bellinger for Heyward/Ortega/Morel CF
Morel for Wisdom 3B
Swanson for Madrigal INF
Wisdom/Mervis for Rivas/Schwindell/Higgins 1B/DH
Gomes for Contreras C

Oh, I have no doubt he will generate a steamer

He didn't go to SICP, otherwise I'd agree.

I knew there had to be a mandated Score/Marquee recurrent theme. Appears like it's "improved run prevention up the middle". Defense up the middle wasn't a huge problem last year. Though Gomes almost doubled Contreras in errors (7 to 4) in less innings.

Felt like Contreras had more than four…turns out Baseball Reference separates passed balls from other errors. Contreras had four “other” errors and led MLB in passed balls with seven.

Bernstein again championed the cause with
Jim Deshaies (barely had a pulse Cubs opinions) that Contreras was dragging the pitching staff down. Each time he'll start out "I don't want to crucify him but...". He's NEVER actually brought up the insignificant difference in their '22 era (Gomes 3.66, Contreras 3.96) or hitters slashline.

The Cubs being 2nd '22 MLB "outs on base" is off limits for Bernstein because it reflects bad on Grandpa. But the Sox are crucified as dumb base runners on the Score being 11th.

Not a big fan of the signing of Dansby. But heard him today on the SCORE and he is a great interview. Seems like a really solid dude. Hopefully he changes my mind on his signing.

I was more surprised the score didn’t light him up for being a Jesus guy. Well maybe I am not he is a Cub.

They won't give him the latitude they gave Rizzo and Heyward, that's for sure.

Just wait until after the Score gives up the rights at the next recompete.

How long before Dansby Swanson is revealed as a conman and a bust?

Unless a miracle happens and Bellinger regains his MVP forms Suzuki goes crazy and Horner takes a big step their offense is gonna be pretty pedestrian

They might be a pretty good run prevention team ity t ge great defense and theyve shown good development with pitching

I'd say they Max out at 80 wins probably 78

I like Swanson hes a good player to have on a championship team obviously but hes not a centerpiece on the other hand I think people see 20 million and still think that's a lot of money there are 51 players making 20 million next year there are 70 players making 18 million so swanson's salary is not a big deal to me but you still need 2 or 3 stars I don't know if those are in the minor league system or if you're gonna fight up through free agency

Mulli congratulated Jed Hoyer on getting a "star" Dansby Swanson (career 95 ops+) and having a "great offseason" . Hoyer the master bs artist appeared noticeably shakey at times stumbling over his words not only with Swanson talk but also when asked about internal conflict with Crane Kenney. M, ZZ & Jed all seemed uncomfortable with the Swanson is a star scripted narrative. Now adding C Tucker Barnhardt ('22 221 .287 .267 .554 64) to an already weak offense. The team's strength is deep young pitching but has no proven stopper ('22 t2nd Bsv).

How can he be a bust when he isn't that good to begin with? Again, somebody explain the career 95 OPS+. Is he a gold glover or something?

Was Swanson aware of Bernstein's long history of mocking Christians before he did the interview?

#7 / 7 years / 177 million

Yes

750-800 ops gold glove shortstop

Good guy to have. Not THEE guy.

25M just isn't that much anymore. He's the 7th highest paid SS

If Bauer becomes available hopefully the Cubs sign him just so July's head will explode!
