Never been and don’t have much of an opinion, but their tourism bureaucracy is running ads during the ECU - CCU game.

One of the highlights of the last ad was a Top Golf. I guess monuments to the Confederacy wouldn’t play to a national audience, but featuring a chain driving range makes me think there’s not a lot happening in a place I’m told is the “Dinner Table of the South.”

Come to Birmingham, we have a Top Golf.

Birmingham in the UK has more canals than Venice. Still a sh!thole though.

You might run into Charles Barkley practicing at that Top Golf. Would that make it more enticing?
Plus as a bonus, you might see him shoveling it in at the "Dinner Table of the South." That should be their tourism campaign.

I remember Kankakee being the worst city in America, so Letterman sent them a gazebo.

Great USFL city. Scott Norwood kicked there in the old USFL.

Not all places can be the "Great" city of Chicago

Correct, Birmingham can't. That's what he's saying.

And I am saying that just maybe everyone doesn't believe Chicago is the greatest place on earth. So I am glad we have all of that clear.

To my knowledge, Chicago proper has zero Top Golfs.

You have recently had a conversation with Grammy and Oscar award winner Randy Newman?

I was down there for a conference in the summer of 2021. Not much to it for a tourist unless you are using it as a base for golfing.

Which makes it strange that they would feature Top Golf. Why not run ads for the actual golf courses they have there that you can play pretty much year round?

I can only guess that Top Golf donated quite a bit to the chamber of commerce down there.

I believe Tops Golf is the preferred nomenclature

Well, we can all agree it’s much better than Birmingham, right?

I don't believe Chicago is the greatest place on Earth. I know it's better than Birmingham though. I will say I don't believe Birmingham is the worst place on Earth though, as they have a Top Golf.

We had an insurance conference there hosted by the Alabama Farm Bureau. These were annual conferences where one of the states would host and then set up meetings in a cool part of their state (Went to French Lich for Indiana). They chose Birmingham over the gulf coast for whatever reason. So we are doing this in Birmingham. The first day when we are supposed to do a tour of the coolest things to see in the location, they say we are going to see a historic factory and a square where the civil rights movement had an important start. They load us on a bus and point to the civil rights place (not even stopping!). Then we go to this factory. Here is what we went to see:

"Sloss Furnaces is a National Historic Landmark in Birmingham, Alabama in the United States. It operated as a pig iron-producing blast furnace from 1882 to 1971. After closing, it became one of the first industrial sites in the U.S. to be preserved and restored for public use."

The place had closed in 1971 and was more of a graveyard. To that end, they were setting it up as a haunted house for Halloween. It was a joke.

At least we went to some NASCAR museum the next night.

My point- avoid Birmingham.

I was at UAB like 25 years ago for some work. It was July or August. I felt as hot as I ever did in Arizona. But humidity too for extra pleasure.

Top Golf is fun for non-golfers. It kind of sucks and its crazy expensive for those who actually play golf.

I would have put the haunted house in French Lich.
