I hate the fan base. What the hell does that have to do with a band or it's songs?

Understand your point. But you can have me listen to a Phish record with not one of thier fans within a hundred miles of me, and I'll still come away not liking it

The fact that Matt Skiba can now be legitimately name-dropped in the same sentence as Pete Wentz saddens me deeply.

my wife likes him, but even she can't stand his "pop" stuff. He had a live concert on two nights ago and she turned it off...

I listen to just about everything and believe that even a randon group of instrument playing chimps is capable of making some pleasurable sound, so I generally tend to dislike specific songs rather than whole bands, but God, do I fucking hate Maroon 5.

I have a few hilarious stories re Fall Out Boy that I should probably keep to myself. The one I will share is only meant to dispel a lot of what you guys are saying about mall-punk (which, yes, is bad). Long and short of it is that Wentz used to be in a few different legitimate "hardcore" (an ubiquitous term in my teenage years that now feels totally ridiculous even to type) bands pre-FOB and at one point I booked one of his bands, Arma Angelus (http://www.myspace.com/armangelus), to play the basement of a church in Roselle, at which show they not only destroyed some of their own gear but that of the church's, as well. It was pretty awkward, considering I was only like 16 at the time and had no money to pay for anything. End of story for these purposes.

Point being, many of these mall-punk bands were dudes who were into legit "underground" (heh) shit and then, literally, "sold out." It's wild. I don't know how I feel about it other than that the music generally does kind of suck.

As for some of the lists here, it's kind of easy to take pot-shots at radio rock. So much of that stuff sticks for a while and due to whatever commercial pressures gets either "played out" or loses any sort of edge, appeal, or raison (e.g. "A Milli"). I guess what strikes me as the worst kind of music is the stuff that's so bloated and "corporate" or fey and middling that any visceral / cerebral response other than ire or boredom is next to impossible. These criterion know no genre, and can apply to countless bands, acts, dj's, etc.

I perfectly understand why someone would not like them, but for some reason I do like them... or at least a handful of their songs. Call it a guilty pleasure, I guess.

What's your opinion on DRI? I saw them at JJ Kellys in Lansing about 4 years ago. A few of my friends formed a "wall of death" there, which was a really bad idea. It's a small place and the security guys there don't fuck around. Needless to say, those friends of mine were thrown out of the place on their assess....literally. :bounce: :bounce:

Doug, you must have a rather, uh, "compact" record collection.

This is the official "band I simply cannot stand" thread.
Never said that I hated Alice in Chains, I just simply cannot stand them.

The reason I mentioned the AIC is because I hate hate hate Man In a Box
and Angry Chair, both of which I had the misfortune of hearing today.

The only 2 AIC songs I ever liked were the Singles soundtrack song, and Them Bones.

I can't stand Layne's voice, I think the drummer sucks, and did I mention
I HATE Man in the Box and Angry Chair.

I saw these guys actually open for Van Halen at the Marcus Ampitheatre like 18 years ago.
I was totally like WTF?
Anyway, I hate AIC. There - I said it. :P

As long as we keep it to "Dealing With It" and earlier, DRI > ST.

Also, you MUST include Bad Religion when discussing credible hardcore bands.

Early Husker Du and the Dicks should be included in the original hardcore bands. DEP, they had some movie that came out a few years back about hardcore. I didn't care much for it but you might like it.

Bands I can't stand...
Zeppelin
Aerosmith
Arcade Fire

American Hardcore. It was a book first, and the doc/film kinda pales in comparison to the book (which itself is far from a comprehensive view of the scene throughout the 80's and 90's - its focus tends toward the late 70's and early 80's West Coast / D.C. scenes). Doug's entitled to his opinion, but to say that there's a lot more to it than his list is itself a severe understatement. Also note: Bad Religion were never quite my thing - and not necessarily because of what I'm about to say - and they were far from being a hardcore band in the true sense of the term/genre.

$.02
