I’m still convinced that this version of Fields is fine if you can turn around the defense. Run the ball, play defense better and you’re a playoff team.
i'm willing to build a team and offense around fields. he's far from perfect and has faults, but if you go rookie QB again you run the risk of ending up worse off. based on what i've seen, i'm willing to work with him and see where it goes. would take a crazy draft pick haul for me to move fields
Build around a running QB and you're holding your breath every time the QB takes off running. One hit and you're running QB based offense is rendered useless. after playing every game he needed to the prior 2 seasons, Lamar
Jackson hasn't been able to stay on the field all the way the last 2 seasons. Mahomes is a reluctant runner: last chance play to make a 1st down on 3rd and long or 4th down and Mahomes might take off running. Otherwise he's looking looking pass-first and pass-last--the running game is there, but it's all bonus.
100%. And you hope you can fall back on defense when the guy is inevitably injured.
For this team, I don’t love the idea of trying to build a great offense around Fields if we’re not sure he can even use it.
Would you bet your future on Justin Fields becoming a good passer? If not, you have to trade him this offseason.
I wouldn’t but I don’t think anybody who’s watched him objectively would either. If I were a GM, no way I’d bet my livelihood trading meaningful assets for him.
So either the Bears double up at QB or they embrace having an elite runner at the position and hope he can mature as a passer. I’d like to see them improve his protection and maybe get a guy who can catch it out of the backfield late in the draft but avoid using big dollars/high draft picks on offensive weapons.
Why are you avoiding offensive weapons? When you said you wouldn't build around Fields, I agreed, but I assumed you meant you wouldn't want to draft guys specifically because their style of plays meshes with Fields. Unless I'm reading your above post incorrectly, it looks like "building around Fields" means something different to the both of us.
I do want weapons. I would draft/acquire legit studs at WR or TE etc because to me I need those players irrespective of who is at QB. If Fields sucks then I find a QB who can leverage the weapons in front of him. In other words, I don't want to skip drafting the next Megatron (I know there's prolly no Megatron in the draft, but just using him as an example), just because my QB (Fields) can't capitalize on Megatron's talents. To me, it's give me Megatron because he's the best player available, and if the QB can't use him, I'll find one someone who can.
