My hot take is if they go into next season with a backup qb with Field’s skill set they like him and if the backup is an old slow white guy retread they don’t.

Great point. I think the veteran guys are there to help him read defenses and breakdown film.

Seeing as there's about 20 teams that wish they had fields right now I don't think it would be smart to let him go

He can run. I'm not sure having 10 offensive linemen on the field is 21st century football.

 Fuckin' smart ass.

if that is the case I would DEFINITELY open the bidding at 2 first round draft picks.

Which is why that’s where I’d START the bidding.

This comment is more fucked up than the one I made about Keanu Reeves

How so? You said 20 teams would love to have him. If that’s the case you should be able to get a big haul for him, and get a top QB in the draft.

Especially if he’s a “superstar in the making “. Generational talents don’t come along very often. You do what you can to get them. Teams will overpay to have the can’t miss never seen anything like him Justin Fields. With the right coaching and system he may break 100 yards through the air against the worst pass defense in the league.

I’m just saying that if the bears can get 2 1st rounders free and clear for fields, and they don’t feel like fields is the guy, the table is set to easily move on.

Poles needs a little bit more than 2 first round picks. I think he can get it.

Depending on the picks, sure. I’d snap up the Texans offering me two first round picks.

Yes, I would take their pick and the Browns pick. Then I would trade down with both.

Yes, I would take their pick and the Browns pick. Then I would trade down with both.

And then use those picks to trade down again. And then again, and on & on you go…play your cards right and you’ll have 64 picks in the middle rounds.

Nobody said he's a gestational talent I said 20 teams would want him right now. It's up to the bears to decide if better is out there. I don't think there is, at least nothing leaps better. I care zero about his stats right now. I watched the kid play. Dude is legit both on ground and the air. Yes he needs to get better. I think he will.

If Peterman and Claypool connect for 10 catches, 180 yards and 2 TDs and the Bears win, does Poles look at his options differently?

Fans may. I'm confident Poles and Eberflus know what Fields is. Besides, Peterman is an absolute bum.

This is a dumb stat on your part. When accounting for yards you have to account for rush yards as well. In your book you'd critique Fields for having zero passing yards on a drive where he accounted for a 60 yard rushing TD.

Does 210 total ypg for his career or 225 total ypg for the season excite you?

I think we're mostly on the same page about Fields. The running is cool but not impressive enough in the big picture. My point here is really to pick apart this yards passed fallacy. Passing yards in a vacuum is not a useful metric. That doesn't mean I'm cool with Fields'passing - I'm obviously not. It's just lazy to focus on passing yards as a path to criticize Fields or any QB.

I think the guy has ridiculous athletic ability, it just isn't suited for a current winning NFL offense.
Fields definitely needs to improve in the passing game next year. He's missed throws and his decision making has been suspect at times. His OLine largely sucks, Kmet's ceiling is average at best, and his WRs (outside of Claypool, who's been hurt) are barely NFL caliber. Those aren't excuses, that is reality.

If you can't build a design a prolific offense with a guy like Justin Fields at the helm, you don't belong as an NFL scout, much less a GM.

Poles will have to the picks and the cap space to improve both sides of the ball next year. If Fields gets some legit NFL talent around him and doesn't take a big step forward, then its time to worry.

There is going to be at least one 9 win team in the playoffs on the NFC side this season. There might be as many as three 9 win playoff teams. Bears should be striving for 9-10 wins and contending for a playoff spot next season. Super Bowl the following season.

I agree with everything here except one sentence: "If fields gets some legit talent around him next year and doesn't take a step forward then it's time to worry." I'd go beyond worrying if that happens. They def need to go in an different direction in that case, and sooner rather than later. They can't drag it out like they did with Mitch once it became clear Mitch wasn't who they thought he'd be.

Willing to bet a healthy Simien wouldve lit the Vikings up this week.

Much like Peterman-man, Siemian is a known entity.

And much like Peterman-man, he sucks.

Fields as a runner is essentially identical to Bobby Douglass:

2022 Fields (15 games)
1,143 yards, 7.1 average, 8 TD, long run of 56

1972 Douglass (14 games)
968 yards, 6.9 average, 8 TD, long run of 57

No, just putting it out there because the #1 reason people say Fields passing stats are so bad is the talent around him. Just saying Cutler had trash around him and he put up good stats. He had a costly turnover problem but that's another story.
