Anyone still think it's stupid the Bears tanked for a year?
Depends what they do with those assets
Because, as it turns out, the Roquan trade really set things in motion for the offseason that was for a Bears team that looks better now than it did at this time last year. Part of that has to do with new Bears linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, who comes in right behind Roquan as the No. 3 linebacker on Fowler’s list.
And if you’re looking for optimism regarding Edmunds’ future, these words from a coordinator who Fowler discusses the new Bears LB with will get your gears going:
Quote:
“{Edmunds} is such a presence out there with his size (6-foot-5, 250 pounds) and his range and ability to close on the ball that he affects the quarterback, makes him think twice about decisions,” an NFL coordinator said. “You always know you have a Pro Bowl talent roaming the middle of the field when he’s out there.”
In other words, Chicago went from having a Pro Bowl linebacker in the middle of its defense to … having a Pro Bowl linebacker in the middle of its defense. And suddenly, I’m thinking about the total payoff of the Roquan Smith trade.
Ravens get …
LB Roquan Smith
The right to pay Roquan Smith an extension that pays him up to $100 million
Bears get …
2nd round pick (used on DT Gervon Dexter Sr.)
5th round pick (used on LB Noah Sewell)
The financial flexibility to pay LBs Tremaine Edmunds & T.J. Edwards with deals whose total value could reach $91.5 million
