Youtube is one of the few places still holding up and Deadspin has hardly any interactions. There were videos posted that had been up for a month that had 6 views. That's really bad.

Interesting. I looked at their financial results:

Ad-Supported gross profit decreased by €68 million, and gross margin decreased from 9% to 1%. The decrease in Ad-Supported gross margin was due primarily to an increase in royalty costs due to growth in both advertising revenue and streams as well as publishing licensing rate increases and additional costs incurred to deliver enhanced product features. “

Their profits from ad supported listeners disappeared in 2022. The gross profit was almost zero. The ad rates are ok, but the cost of the royalties is killing them.

Was talking to a CEO of a large radio group last fall. He said there was still good money in radio, but that hedge funds had run out of ways to cut costs and were struggling to pay off their debt loads.

I always thought Spotify's business model protected them from paying out more to artists than they took in. That they would total up all the money that came in from subscribers, and then split the net revenue with the artists based on each artist's percentage of the minutes played.

I didn’t read too much of their filing. They file as a foreign issuer. They segment premium and ad supported subscribers, but as for business model, I did not dive into that. I think the ad supported business also means payment to podcasters.

This reminds me of a random Saturday afternoon when July and Rocky Dennis still had their Saturday show on the score. Tail end of football season, Peggy was sitting in for Rocky Dennis. They were out and about somewhere. Lance Briggs was on as a guest. If it weren't for Julie chiming in with some nonsensical question every so often, you wouldn't even know she was there. And Peggy's tone was like "thanks Julie, now back to the football people talking".
