Doesnt need a reason. They were cops. He was scared. Running is justified.

I’m confident he’s still alive if he doesn’t run Crest .

Even with no basis for said confidence

I'm 100% positive that the penalty for running away shouldn't be death by gang beating, no matter his motivation for doing so (which in this case seems like pretty good instincts).

It would seem like that would be something that didn't even need to be said.

I can tell you from pesonal experience that cops often become unhinged when you run from them.

I will make no excuse for these cops in any way whatsoever. Now that that is clear I believe (and it may be widely known or studied) that when high speed chases, dangerously involved apprehensions or other high adrenaline interactions make these types of things more common.

I also believe it is perfectly reasonable for a black man to fear the cops and want to flee.

I wish we knew what the hell started this whole damn thing off. If for nothing else but to clean up the prosecution of these animals.

Do they become less unhinged if you may be sleeping with their ex-wife?

That has the potential to unhinge anyone. Like I said, it would certainly explain the viciousness and savagery with which they beat him. This was way over the top even for the most tyrannical cops.

It's nice for you to believe that, but there are thousands of incidents that suggest the exact opposite.

Amadou Diallo, Freddie Gray, the cigarette guy in New York, Fred Hampton, the countless others who suffered at the hands of guys like Jon Burge. North and south.

I'm not positive, but I think being pepper sprayed and beaten will trigger our fight or flight instincts. He never fought, but he repeatedly tried to protect his eyes and avoid the abuse. He failed. He ended up 400 yards or so from his parents house.

The ex-wife thing would help explain a lot of the more questionable behaviors: unwarranted traffic stop, his decision to run, the beating/murder, the in-the-moment lies about Nichols reaching for weapons.

And was dealing with scumbags who had a well coordinated lie in progress until a different surveillance camera video came to light.

Yeah, they were ready for the cover up. The eyes in the sky fucked up that plan.

Better chance of getting away with it legally while on duty. Probably did not account for the camera pod which made what happened much clearer then the body cam footage.

We're both old enough to know some old school cops. Black, white or otherwise, a bunch of them felt public beatings were a necessity. To make an example and to establish authority. And it wasn't some small percentage of cops four decades ago. So this "just don't run" may have some legitimacy now but it didn't pre video and pre smartphone. It would be good to remember this shit isn't ancient history and stories have been told.

Why does every piece I'm seeing on this suddenly highlight a photo of the white cop who got fired for standing and watching a bunch of black guys beat and kill the victim?

Of course. The kid was beat to death. I'm just pointing out there's an oral history that's been passed down and "just don't run" sometimes doesn't compute for a totally panicked black kid. It's why cops need to start acting professional. If they can't, go get another job. It's not for them.

I came of age when Daley's jump out boys would beat and humiliate young people in pursuit of a bag of marijuana, but wouldn't arrest anyone.

I still remember these two female cops roughing up one of my classmates at the park in the mid 90s for smarting off to them. He is actually a cop now .

Fits the narrative of "white privilege".

The "white supremacy" angle here is not gonna be a winner, like "Defund the Police." It's amazing to see some people who have a simplistic notion of complex events either double down or act like their minds are blown when they realize that causes and effects go beyond manichaeanism.

Here's a journalistic article that actually tries to introduce some of the possible reasons behind this killing. It's not exhaustive, for sure, but at least they give those with slightly different ideas a voice: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/28/us/p ... -race.html
