We're both old enough to know some old school cops. Black, white or otherwise, a bunch of them felt public beatings were a necessity. To make an example and to establish authority. And it wasn't some small percentage of cops four decades ago. So this "just don't run" may have some legitimacy now but it didn't pre video and pre smartphone. It would be good to remember this shit isn't ancient history and stories have been told.

I wouldn't argue with that, but this isn't typical or common. Which is why it's such a big story.

Of course. The kid was beat to death. I'm just pointing out there's an oral history that's been passed down and "just don't run" sometimes doesn't compute for a totally panicked black kid. It's why cops need to start acting professional. If they can't, go get another job. It's not for them.

I still remember these two female cops roughing up one of my classmates at the park in the mid 90s for smarting off to them. He is actually a cop now .

It sounds like they could have given your buddy a life-long kink.

Fits the narrative of "white privilege".

The "white supremacy" angle here is not gonna be a winner, like "Defund the Police." It's amazing to see some people who have a simplistic notion of complex events either double down or act like their minds are blown when they realize that causes and effects go beyond manichaeanism.

Here's a journalistic article that actually tries to introduce some of the possible reasons behind this killing. It's not exhaustive, for sure, but at least they give those with slightly different ideas a voice: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/28/us/p ... -race.html

Before I read that, does it address the ex-wife angle? As Antioch said, that would explain (not justify) a great many things.

It doesn't. It's not much of a column, but interesting because it at least gives really brief clips of some other ways to look at this. Nothing substantial.

Newsweek says no verified relationship: https://www.newsweek.com/tyre-nichols-f ... ey-1777823

How is Rev. Al still able to insinuate himself into these situations? He was a national joke decades ago. He's been parodied in movies and ridiculed for his narcissism universally. He doesn't even reverend any more. Somehow people turn to him for spiritual advice.

He did give a good sermon last time he was called upon

I came of age when Daley's jump out boys would beat and humiliate young people in pursuit of a bag of marijuana, but wouldn't arrest anyone.

I saw that at least a couple dozen times a year and once when I was talking about it, my late grandfather talked about black cops like “Two Gun Pete” who were notorious for the same things back in the forties and fifties.

And I won’t even go into the stories of crooked cops working for the mob who were trying to force out non mafia number runners. I had a great aunt who got spitting mad thinking about it as late as the nineties.

He’s a ridiculously successful opportunist and predator. Just like many cynical “men of the cloth” who have stepped into a vacuum.

They are still retrying old cases from the Sgt Watts era. The person that they interviewed in this article is a friend of mine. I remember when he did time in the joint but I never knew that he too went down on those Watts indictments back in the day. That dude took down quite a few guys that I know personally. The city is still "paying" for it as a result.

https://abc7chicago.com/chicago-police- ... /12291913/

Quote:
CHICAGO (WLS) -- Eight more convictions involving disgraced Chicago police Sgt. Ronald Watts were thrown out Monday.

In all, the Cook County State's Attorney's office has moved to vacate 220 cases involving Watts, who has a history of falsely pinning crimes on innocent people.

"This is the worst stain, in my opinion, on the Chicago Police Department and the City of Chicago," said Josh Tepfler, an attorney for the Exoneration Project.

Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx releasing a statement, saying in part, "...we will never be able to give them that time back. We will continue to review these cases as we seek justice for all his victims."

Derrick Mapp, whose case was vacated last year, said he still has the scars and the pain.

"I almost died," Mapp said. "I almost lost my life."

Mapp said he was beaten by Watts and left with a collapsed lung, then Watts planted drugs on him in 2006. Mapp went to prison leaving his young sons and wife. And when he got out, he had the lasting effects of having a felony on his record.

"I do the odd jobs, cut grass, take trash out for the elderly because they don't want to give anyone with a background no work," Mapp said. "I had plans and I had plans to do a lot of things. I been working all my life since I was a teenager. This never should have happened the way Watts did that."

Beating, beating, beating, beating,
Police brutality live on TV,
Don't date a cops wife,
Or you'll rue the day
Memphis PD, have it your way...

She had a similar unit in Atlanta, and the city had to pay out millions of dollars because of their abuse.

I mean, show me any big city police force that isn’t paying out millions every year due to police brutality.

Yeah, but these units are so 90's.

And need to pay some of the judgements they out of their pensions.

I have some extremist views on this that don’t involve money. Give the Lord a day off from working on vengeance. Taxpayers paying for rage rooms without walls should end.

Beat a man to death and then texted photos of their work. Anything less than 20 years is unjust.

Probably sent some to that LA County officer in exchange for Kobe pics.

I'm really surprised we haven't seen those photos yet. It's been 3 years and I believe the court case is settled.

Maybe they were all destroyed. You would have to figure somebody from TMZ would get their hands on at least one somehow.
